As winter break envelops Finland, three college friends embark on an audacious journey to the Soviet Union. The charming leader Savoy (Albert Salmi), the easygoing Mitch (David Coburn), and the thoughtful KC (Ismo Kallio) find themselves in a small village soon after crossing the border. Unfortunately, their decision leads them straight into the clutches of corrupt officials, resulting in their arrest and subsequent transfer to a grim prison where they endure severe mistreatment by KGB agents.
Within the dark confines of their cell, the trio faces relentless torture, ultimately coerced into falsely confessing to being American spies, with grave accusations of rape and murder laid upon them. As KC’s health declines drastically due to an untreated infection that leaves him bedridden, Savoy and a clever black-market inmate formulate a plan to assist their ailing friend. Meanwhile, Mitch gets ensnared in a cruel “chess match,” where prisoners are forced to fight each other to the death.
In a desperate moment, the U.S. Ambassador visits the prison. Savoy pleads for their plight to be addressed, but the ambassador’s chilling advice suggests their best chance is simply to disappear. Amid the chaos, a fellow prisoner arranges a clandestine meeting between Savoy and The Admiral (Thalmus Rasulala), a former intelligence operative who has access to comforts within the prison. Unbeknownst to Savoy, the admiral harbors a treacherous agenda to betray all American and Russian secrets upon escaping.
As KC succumbs to his illness, a grim mercy killing orchestrated by the fixer sends Savoy into a fury over such a heartbreaking loss. Nevertheless, he channels his rage into a daring escape plan. With the help of a brave young Russian prisoner, Savoy manages to rescue Mitch from the lethal “chess matches” before confronting The Admiral. What follows is a tense showdown resulting in multiple security officers meeting their end, although it tragically costs Mitch his life.
With the KGB closing in, Savoy and the courageous female inmate navigate perilous landscapes, culminating in a fierce confrontation with the prison’s administrator, leading to the latter’s demise and their successful escape across the Finnish border.
As the dust settles, a final note reveals that The Admiral has fled to an undisclosed location, while Savoy and his love interest have found solace in America. Meanwhile, a shadowy agreement between Washington and Moscow ensures that the truth about the entire harrowing ordeal remains buried, with both governments denying the existence of any prisoners or their escape.
