Sara Tancredi is arrested for the murder of Christina Rose Scofield Hampton. She is taken to the overcrowded Miami-Dade State Penitentiary, where space is so tight that the female inmates share the same building as the men. From the outer edge of the yard, Gretchen Morgan keeps watch, while across the grounds, Jonathan Krantz – known in the prison world as The General – and Theodore ‘T-Bag’ Bagwell are held in the men’s wing.
The General puts out a dangerous bounty, offering a $100,000 price on Sara’s head. Sara is poisoned, but the prison doctor saves her life and delivers hard news: her baby will be taken away soon after birth. Michael Scofield pushes for protection for Sara and asks Warden Alice Simms to intervene, but she refuses. With no other option, Michael decides to orchestrate a breakout, enlisting help from Lincoln Burrows and Fernando Sucre.
Gretchen observes Lincoln and Sucre scouting the prison and insists on being included in the escape plan. Michael soon identifies a blind spot in the security cameras, sparking hopes of a successful break. Alexander Mahone is pulled into the scheme when the FBI valorizes his cooperation, offering reinstatement in exchange for evidence that could incriminate Michael. Agent Todd Wheatley also intrudes, breaking into Michael’s apartment and catching a glimpse of the prison diagrams. Michael returns with a story about examining weaknesses to report to Simms to gain visitation rights.
Sara’s attorney secures a court order that allows Michael to visit, and as he leaves the prison, he notices the cameras being tweaked to eliminate the blind spot. Sara enters the prison “Family” circle led by Daddy Daddy, gaining work in the motor pool and drawing wary glances from Wife and the other Family members.
With a parachute-based plan in mind, Michael weighs new risks. Lincoln offers Theodore ‘T-Bag’ Bagwell a small stake to help by triggering a fire alarm, while T-Bag counters with a demand for $100,000 and even proposes stealing the bounty money from the General’s agent, Joe Daniels. Lincoln and Sucre carry out a theft to back up the plan.
Gretchen escalates matters by killing a Family member during a confrontation with Sara, and she pushes for inclusion in the escape so she can reach her daughter Emily. Daddy grows furious upon learning what Sara and Gretchen have done. Meanwhile, Mahone has tipped Wheatley off about Michael’s parachute plot, complicating the plan. Michael continues to trust Mahone, providing him material to pass to Sara if he dies.
Michael visits Sara and reveals a revised objective: head to the chapel, which houses an emergency escape tunnel. Just before the breakout, Gretchen distracts a guard, and Sara confronts Daddy. Sara shoves Daddy into Skittlez, triggering a broader clash; Gretchen grabs the guard’s keys and hides in the kitchen with Sara.
Wheatley, now alerted, orders lights out and positions armed guards near Michael’s intended landing site. They shoot at a parachutist, only to discover it’s a dummy, while Michael slides out from beneath Wheatley’s car and disappears. Gretchen is spotted but stalls the guards and protects Sara’s presence, who then retrieves the necklace Gretchen made for Emily.
As the escape nears, Michael’s plan unfolds exactly as predicted: a quiet short circuit instead of a loud breakout. He is electrocuted while powering the device, but Sara manages to escape to a waiting Lincoln, Sucre, and Mahone. Mahone reveals he was part of Michael’s broader plan all along, and that the deadly short circuit was a necessary component.
Together, Lincoln Burrows and Sara flee by boat to the Dominican Republic, with Sucre handing Sara the $100,000. Mahone provides Sara and Lincoln with the material from Michael, and on the voyage they watch a final message from Michael. In the video, he explains that his terminal brain tumor has returned and asks Lincoln to stay steadfast for the child, while urging Sara to look out for Lincoln.
