Black Peter

Petr begins a trainee position in theft prevention at a grocery store. His supervisor criticizes him for being conspicuous, and when he suspects a man of stealing he is too nervous to confront him and simply follows him instead. He returns home where his father questions his inaction and scolds him for not taking decisive action.

Petr develops feelings for Pavla, who is dating Mara. They go for a swim and lie on the grass, enjoying a moment together, but they are harassed by Čenda and Zdeněk, two apprentice bricklayers. The encounter hints at looming tension between Petr and the others.

At a party, drunk Čenda spots Petr with Pavla and argues with him, creating an awkward scene. The master mason notices the quarrel and blames Petr for making him look bad in front of the boss. Petr lends Čenda money during the tension, hoping to mollify the situation.

Čenda uses the borrowed money to buy more drinks to muster courage to tell a girl in blue that he likes her. Meanwhile, Petr dances with Pavla but struggles with the trendy moves. When Petr returns home, his mother interrogates him about the evening.

The next day at the shop, Petr delivers two prints of famous paintings; one print slides and breaks the glass and frame. He takes the damaged print, of a naked woman, with him on a date with Pavla.

The following day at work, Petr sees the man he followed earlier and warns his boss about him, but the boss shakes the man's hand and leads him to a back room. Petr remains confused by the boss's reaction. He later notices a woman stealing several bags of sweets in the shop but does not intervene, which gnaws at him.

Petr's father bombard him with questions about his behavior and why he failed to act. He suspects that the inaction was retaliation for something that went wrong at the shop, but Petr refuses to explain.

Petr's father laments investing in a violin and an accordion that remain unused while Petr buys a guitar that can't earn him money. The disagreement underscores a growing rift between father and son.

While the argument rages, Čenda knocks on the door. Petr's parents invite him inside and Čenda returns the money Petr lent him; Petr's mother offers him cake, showing hospitality. The scene highlights shifts of alliance and tension within the social circle.

Petr's father makes Čenda show Petr his hands so that his son can see what hardworking hands look like. Zdeněk reminds Čenda that they must leave, and Čenda hesitates to stay longer but backs away when pressed. The father uses the moment to emphasize what he values as important.

The argument continues with the father explaining his perspective on what matters in life. Čenda tries to linger, but ultimately leaves when pressed. The scene reinforces the film's focus on responsibility, work ethic, and generational tensions.

The sequence ends with ongoing tension among Petr, Čenda, and his father, leaving questions about action, responsibility, and the path Petr will choose. The family dynamics remain the frame for Petr's moral development.
