Petr, Ladislav Jakim, a Czech teenager, begins a trainee role in theft prevention at a local grocery store. The shop manager criticizes him for being too conspicuous, and when he suspects a man of stealing, he is too nervous to confront him. Instead, he tails the man through the streets and returns home, where his father, Jan Vostrčil, admonishes him with questions about how he acted and why he did not intervene.

Petr fancies Pavla, who is dating Mára. The two go for a swim and lie on the grass, where they are harassed by Čenda and Zdeněk, two apprentice bricklayers. Later, at a party, the drunken Čenda argues with Petr; the master mason notices and blames Petr for making him look bad in front of the boss, then asks to borrow money. Petr lends him money, and Čenda buys more drinks to muster the courage to tell a girl in blue that he likes her, but the girl in blue has already begun to dance with someone else. Petr dances with Pavla but is unfamiliar with the popular moves. When he returns home, his mother questions him about the evening’s details.

The next day Petr delivers two prints of famous paintings to the shop, but one falls and breaks the glass and frame. He takes the print, of a naked woman, with him on a date with Pavla. The following day at work, Petr sees the man he followed before and notifies his boss, but his boss shakes the man’s hand and leads him into the back room. Confused, Petr watches a woman steal several bags of sweets by hiding them in her bag, yet he does not stop her. His father questions him again about his behavior and why he failed to act, and he suspects that the inaction was retaliation related to the shop.

His father laments investing in a violin and an accordion that sit unused while Petr buys a guitar that cannot earn him money, a detail that underscores the gap between adult expectations and a teenager’s uncertain future. As the argument escalates, Čenda arrives at the door. Petr’s parents invite him in and share a piece of cake as Čenda returns the money Petr lent him. Petr’s father wants to illustrate the value of hard work, so Čenda, an apprentice bricklayer, is asked to show Petr his hands to understand the toil behind labor. When Zdeněk reminds Čenda that they must leave, the moment lingers as a reminder of the tensions between work, ambition, and family expectations.
