In this gritty Hong Kong crime drama, Tung, Anthony Wong, a street cop with a hard edge, finds himself drawn into a chord of loyalty, danger, and gritty personal stakes when his friend Fai, Roy Cheung Yiu-Yeung, a triad dai lo, hires a hit on a business rival. There, Cheung crosses paths with Yoyo, Kathy Chow Hoi-Mei, a sharp, wily madam who also happens to be Fai’s moll. Although Yoyo arrives with anger over Fai’s abrupt departure, she is drawn to Cheung, and the two men and the woman feel the first stirrings of a fragile, dangerous romance. The disco becomes a crucible where loyalties are tested and bonds form under neon lights and loud music.

Meanwhile, Fai’s eager underling, Push-pin, Patrick Tam, steps into Fai’s shadowy role and tries to push Yoyo’s escorts into peddling drugs to customers. Yoyo resists, and Push-pin’s decision to strike back sets off a chain of consequences that Cheung begins to unravel with nightly checks on Push-pin’s establishments. As Cheung and Yoyo’s relationship deepens into something real, Tung’s own personal life grows more precarious: a married woman, who treats him as a source of money, leaves him financially tapped and morally tangled, complicating his judgment and his grip on what is right.

Crucially, a moment of bribe secrecy emerges. Push-pin, realizing his status is eventually tied to the triad’s leadership, tries to smooth Tung’s conscience with a cash gift—an act that becomes a black mark, linking Tung to corruption in the eyes of the case and forcing him to confront the uneasy truth that he might be compromised. The conflict escalates as Fai returns to town and discovers that Yoyo is seeing Cheung. The revelation drives a fierce confrontation: Fai challenges Cheung, while Yoyo asserts her love for Cheung and their plans for a baby, pushing Tung to the edge of his limits. The tension peaks when Fai and Push-pin cross paths at Push-pin’s underground casino, where an emotional standoff ends with Push-pin cutting Fai down with a machete. Tung, arriving outside the club, witnesses his friend’s lifeless form and is overwhelmed by the impulse to seek vengeance.

A brutal pursuit unfolds as Tung, fuelled by alcohol and barbiturates, hunts Push-pin through the night. He crashes into the underworld’s labyrinth, facing Push-pin and his men in a fierce, chaotic struggle. Cheung and his officers finally intervene, only to find Tung mortally wounded by a steel spike driven into his gut. In a startling turn, Push-pin is killed by one of Fai’s own men, and Tung—though gravely injured—survives the brutal encounter.

With the immediate crisis averted, Tung and Cheung confront the remaining power structure in the precinct’s orbit. They pay a final visit to the triad boss Tai, Arthur Wong Ngok-Tai, the man behind the city’s shadowy balance of power. The two officers pledge to bring Tai down, signaling that the fight against corruption, vengeance, and organized crime will continue beyond this night, and the film closes with a hard-won, unresolved tension: justice is possible, but it will demand more blood, more risk, and more sacrifice from those who walk the edge of the law.
