The Black Nebula Empire returns with a crushing show of force, landing a massive fortress on Earth and wiping out Earth’s space fleets. They broadcast a chilling warning: their fortress hides a bomb that can destroy all life on the planet, and they will detonate it unless Earth surrenders. In the face of this overwhelming threat, the human defense looks all but doomed—until a glimmer of hope emerges from an extraordinary discovery: the Yamato has been secretly rebuilt, and its crew gathers to confront the invaders head-on. Susumu Kodai leads the returned ship and its motivated band of sailors on a daring quest to strike at the heart of the Black Nebula and halt their bid to conquer Earth.

As the voyage begins, tensions rise aboard the rejuvenated Yamato. On a tense mission of reconnaissance and counterattack, Yuki Mori is captured by a Black Nebulan intelligence officer named Alphon. The encounter quickly becomes personal, as Alphon wrestles with his growing feelings for Yuki even as the larger war rages around them. He tries to sway her, but when he realizes that she still clings to the hope that Susumu Kodai is alive, he releases her and she joins the human resistance instead. The moment exposes a hidden wrinkle in the war: what looks like a simple invasion is entangled with loyalties, identities, and a future that might already be written.

The Yamato pushes toward the outer reaches of the Black Nebula, discovering a planet on the far side that bears a striking resemblance to Earth. When the crew lands, they are greeted by the enigmatic leader Skulldart. He reveals a staggering twist: the world they’ve found is actually Earth 200 years in the future, and the Nebulans have sent their forces back in time to pave the way for conquest. He warns that returning to their own time would seal their fates, and he offers a grim choice—stay on this future Earth and accept the inevitability of conquest or leave and face annihilation. The Yamato crew declines Skulldart’s invitation, determined to return to their own era and protect their home. Yet the choice comes with a cost: Sasha Kodai chooses to remain behind, believing she has a role to play as a human-Iscandarian hybrid and feeling that her presence might still tip the balance in this struggle.

Back with the Yamato, a calculated deception unfolds as Sanada and the others realize the voyage to the “future Earth” is a trap designed to coax them into surrender. The crew resolves to strike a second time, targeting the false Earth’s weapon system with the ship’s fearsome Wave Motion Gun. As they press forward, Sasha signals a way to disable the core’s defense by opening a vent that lets them reach the heart of Dezarium—the true weapon at the core of Skulldart’s deception. In tandem, the resistance on Earth scrambles to disarm the bomb that threatens all life.

On Earth, Yuki joins the fight at the bomb’s location, crossing paths with Alphon once more. The two are drawn into a quiet, reluctant confrontation as the battle rages around them. The revelation lands hard: the Black Nebulans are cyborgs who lost their original bodies to overreliance on automation, and their mission to take human bodies for themselves reveals a grim motive behind the invasion. Alphon, mortally wounded, imparts crucial knowledge about disarming the bomb—both the trigger on the bomb and the control system on Dezarium must be disabled in concert. With his final breath, he helps Yuki understand that victory will require more than brute force.

With the bomb’s trigger and Dezarium’s control system simultaneously sabotaged, the Yamato charges into Dezarium’s core. The battle carves a path through the planet’s defenses, but tragedy strikes as the ship’s bridge sustains a direct hit. Captain Osamu Kobayashi—the man who embodies leadership in the darkest hours—falls, leaving Susumu Kodai to assume command. Though hesitant at first, Kodai steels himself, takes charge of the Wave Motion Gun, and—driven by a sense of duty and by Sasha’s last plea—fires. The destructive blaze seals Dezarium’s doom, and the immediate threat to Earth is neutralized.

As the Yamato departs for home, Sasha’s spirit appears, offering a final blessing and urging the crew to carry on protecting Earth. Her departure marks a poignant turn, giving Kodai and Yuki a chance to reunite as the ship belts its way back toward Earth. In the quiet moments between battles and the long journey home, the crew’s resolve hardens: their mission to safeguard Earth is far from over, but this victory proves they can face whatever futures may lie ahead.

The return to Earth brings a hard-won peace and a tender reunion. The crew’s long pilgrimage concludes with Yuki Mori and Susumu Kodai reaffirming their bond, while the memory of Sasha lingers as a reminder that courage can come from many sources, including those who choose to stay behind for the greater good.
