The film unfolds in the summer of 1979 in Pößneck, a town in Thuringia, where two neighboring families hatch an audacious plan to escape the German Democratic Republic and reach West Germany by building and piloting a self-made hot air balloon. The Wetzel family, Günter and Petra, along with their two children, initially set their sights on a daring crossing, but Günter hesitates, concerned that eight people in a small balloon might be a dangerous gambit. Petra, worried for the safety of their kids, agrees to pause. Around them, the Strelzyk family—Doris and Peter, together with their two sons—see a window of opportunity. Their teenage son Frank is secretly in love with Klara Baumann, the daughter of their neighbor Erik, who works for the Stasi, and Frank clings to a farewell letter as if to seal his life on one side of the border and his future on the other. This tense emotional undercurrent threads through the decision to push ahead with the escape.

That same night, the Strelzyks load the balloon and related equipment into their trailer, heading toward the forest under cover of darkness. They manage to slip into the clouds, shielded from border guards, and everything seems possible until disaster strikes: the gas-bottle pipes freeze and clog the burner, causing the balloon to descend only a short distance from the border. The four passengers emerge unscathed, erase every trace of their attempt, and recover the precious farewell letter that Frank managed to save. But the escape attempt does not go unnoticed. The Stasi is quick to zero in on the incident, and Lieutenant Colonel Seidel takes charge of a broad investigation, interrogating border guards and piecing together how the escape might have started. The cloud of suspicion grows as the investigators narrow the suspect pool and begin to connect objects left behind with the people who may have carried them.

In the weeks that follow, both families live in a climate of fear and vigilance. Doris, in particular, frets over a lost medication supply that disappeared during the forest ordeal, because the pills are traceable and could expose their identities to the authorities. Peter, determined to try again, presses Günter to devise another plan. A new route is sought, one that might bring success but must stay under the radar. The families travel to East Berlin in hopes of getting help from the US Embassy, yet that avenue fails. Undeterred, Peter persuades Günter to attempt a second balloon escape. To keep a lower profile, they acquire materials in small quantities—sourcing fabric in several different towns—and Günter works at the sewing machine every night, stitching the pieces into a coherent craft.

Meanwhile, the Seidel-led investigation tightens its grip. The Stasi begins to reconstruct how the Strelzyks were connected to the escape—evidence emerges, including the medication, and the authorities publish photographs of objects left behind at the first landing site. To avoid attracting attention from their wary neighbors, Günter even moves his sewing operation into the Strelzyks’ cellar. Frank, observing how Erik Baumann must fetch medication from the pharmacy, realizes that the wind is favorable for a second try and signals that the opportunity is ripe for a late-night launch. The plan presses forward even as the Stasi closes in, determined to prevent any embarrassment from a successful breach of the border.

When the second attempt begins, the start is not as flawless as the first. The balloon’s ascent is imperfect, and the gas runs low, forcing the craft to land in a forest after roughly half an hour of flight. For a tense moment it is unclear whether the travelers have truly crossed the border, but Peter and Günter cautiously explore the area and eventually encounter a police patrol car. The officers confirm they are in Upper Franconia, and in that instant, a collective relief washes over the families. The pursuit by the Seidel-led team culminates in explanations to the Stasi leadership, and Erik Baumann is questioned as the authorities reassemble the chain of events that would either sanction or condemn the escape attempt.

The story closes with a quiet, hopeful note. Ten years later, Doris and Peter Strelzyk sit together as they watch Hans-Dietrich Genscher’s televised statement from the Prague embassy, announcing that GDR citizens gathered there would be allowed to leave. The moment captures the long arc of risk, persistence, and the hard-won possibility of a life beyond the border that neither time nor distance could erase.
