By the year 2030, the government of California, facing severe financial troubles, introduces the dangerous Grand Lottery. Each Lottery Day, the unfortunate individual selected as the winner must survive until sundown; meanwhile, anyone with a losing ticket can eliminate the winner to claim a staggering multi-million-dollar prize. The twist? No firearms or bullets can be used in this deadly game.
Amidst the chaos, a rugged man, played by Seann William Scott, finds himself under attack in the streets. Thanks to his impressive combat skills, he manages to evade his pursuers and seeks refuge in a house belonging to Grandma Tala, a maid portrayed by Dolly De Leon, who is babysitting an infant. In a shocking turn of events, Grandma Tala reveals her lethal side and kills the rugged man while feigning innocence, promptly claiming the lottery prize of $22 million before others arrive.
Enter Katie Kim, a former child star played by Awkwafina, who arrives in Los Angeles hoping to revive her career. Unbeknownst to her, the Lottery is about to draw again, with an unprecedented $3.6 billion jackpot at stake due to previous rollovers. On her way, Katie encounters an elderly woman named Sweet Irene played by Becky Ann Baker, who ultimately swipes Katie’s watch during their brief interaction. After renting a room from the opportunistic Shadi and her boyfriend DJ, Katie soon realizes that the apartment above her is leaking sewage, ruining her belongings. She finds herself having to pay Shadi to borrow some clothes for an important audition, which only adds to her misfortunes.
After an expensive and disappointing audition, Katie’s luck takes a turn when she inadvertently wins the Lottery. Suddenly, she’s thrust into a nightmare as everyone around her—enemies from her audition, and even martial arts enthusiasts—attempts to claim her newfound wealth by any means necessary. Fortunately, Katie soon crosses paths with Noel Cassidy, a dedicated Lottery protection agent played by John Cena, who proposes to safeguard her life for a cut of her winnings. As they navigate the danger, Noel employs non-lethal tactics to fend off the hordes of hostile “fans” while revealing the dire situation Katie is in—every 14 minutes, a drone is tracking her every move.
With no one to trust, Katie escapes through various harrowing situations, from being sheltered in a wax museum, tricking her pursuers with clever maneuvers, to taking refuge in the panic room of MGK (Machine Gun Kelly), in a comical yet perilous attempt. They soon realize that a group led by Shadi is closing in, forcing them to seek help from the Lewis Protection Agency led by Simu Liu. With shifting allegiances and revelations about the agency’s true motives, Katie wrestles with her complicated past as a child actor and the fate of her newfound fortune.
As the stakes rise, Katie and Noel are forced to confront Louis, the head of the protection agency, who has ulterior motives linked to the Lottery winners. Their journey culminates in a climactic showdown, where Katie must outsmart Louis to save Noel and reclaim her life. Harnessing the power of her fans via a live-stream, she showcases her resilience, confronting Louis in a final showdown that leads to a dramatic conclusion.
Fast forward six months later, Katie and Noel use their Lottery winnings to establish various businesses and a protective agency that aids other Lottery winners at no charge. In a tongue-in-cheek homage to their success, they purchase a luxurious super-yacht, showing that “money changes everything.” Meanwhile, MGK has plans for an enhanced panic room to gear up for future iterations of the Grand Lottery, hinting at further chaos to come.
