What Happens in Autumn: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Autumn (1974) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In mid-October, Ilya Yumashev, a doctor who is unhappily married and childless, and his childhood friend Sasha arrive from Leningrad to spend a week in a remote northern village, posing as a married couple. They reconnect after years apart, realizing that the feelings they once believed were gone have quietly endured.

There, they are hosted by the village pair Dusya Dusya and Eduard Eduard (Edik), who reveal their own marital struggles and invite the visitors to share in their stories. The presence of these hosts frames the week with frank conversations about love, commitment, and the compromises people make.

Ilya faces a deep inner conflict, knowing he should tell his wife that he’s leaving, yet he cannot bring himself to speak the words. The tension grows as he even makes a call from a nearby village, but remains silent, choosing restraint over revelation.

Sasha senses his hesitation and begs him not to walk away, even as doubt gnaws at her own certainty about their future together. The days drift by with fishing, long conversations, and quiet moments of reflection as the visitors absorb local rhythms and the hosts reveal their own joys and pains.

When the week ends, they return to the city as the season’s first snow falls, carrying with them a sense of unresolved longing and the fragile possibility of what might come next. Feeling unsettled by solitude, Sasha visits her friend Margot Margot, whose unconventional marriage offers a strange kind of comfort and perspective.

Back in her room late at night, Sasha finds Ilya waiting, a silent sign that he may have finally chosen to be with her, leaving both of them suspended between what they are and what they might become.

Q1

Why are Ilya and Sasha pretending to be married in the remote village?

They present themselves as a married couple as a cover for their circumstances. Ilya is still legally married to another woman, while Sasha is recently divorced. The pretense allows them to spend time together openly without social scrutiny in the conservative rural environment.

Q2

Why doesn't Ilya tell his wife he wants to leave her?

Ilya cannot bring himself to speak the words because he lacks the courage to definitively end his marriage, even though he is deeply unhappy. He calls his wife from a nearby village but remains silent, choosing inaction over the painful confrontation required to break free.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early on that Ilya is trapped in a childless, unsatisfying marriage that he cannot escape.

Q4

Why does Sasha fear that Ilya will leave her?

Sasha senses Ilya's hesitation to commit fully to their relationship. She knows he has not yet ended his marriage and fears he will choose his existing life over a future with her. Her anxiety stems from past heartbreak and uncertainty about whether their rekindled love can survive his indecision.

Foreshadowing: Throughout the week, Sasha watches Ilya struggle with his obligation to his wife, which mirrors her own previous abandonment.

Q5

What does Ilya's silent presence in Sasha's room at the end mean?

Ilya waiting silently in Sasha's room late at night suggests he has finally chosen to be with her, leaving his wife. However, the film deliberately leaves this ambiguous, he may have come to a decision, or he may simply be seeking comfort. The uncertainty reflects the film's broader theme of tentative hope amid unresolved choices.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Sasha begged Ilya not to walk away, and his presence in her room after her solitary visit to Margot hints at his final choice.

Q6

Why do Edik and Dusya reveal their marital problems to the visitors?

Q7

What does the first snow represent at the end of the film?

The first snow marks the end of their secluded week and signals their return to the harsh reality of city life. It symbolizes a transitional moment, the close, intimate world of the village giving way to the cooler, uncertain future awaiting them. The seasonal shift reflects their emotional state: leaving the warmth of rekindled love for the ambiguity of what comes next.

Q8

Why does Sasha visit Margot after returning to the city?

Q9

What prevents Sasha and Ilya from being together despite their feelings?

Their main obstacle is Ilya's unresolved marriage, he cannot bring himself to end it, even though he is unhappy. Additionally, years of suppressed feelings and the weight of their separate histories create emotional barriers. Both carry the scars of failed relationships, making commitment feel risky and uncertain.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes their childhood friendship and the marriage they once considered but never pursued.

Q10

Why does the film leave the ending unresolved?

The ambiguous ending reflects the film's overall mood of tentative, bittersweet hope. The director chose not to definitively resolve Ilya and Sasha's fate because the story is about the complexity of love, obligation, and personal history, themes that resist simple closure. Leaving their future open invites viewers to project their own hopes and interpretations onto the characters.
