The whole story of Autumn Leaves (1956) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Millicent 'Milly' Wetherby works at home as a self-employed typist. One evening in a diner, she meets a lonely, younger U.S. Army veteran named Burt Hanson. They share a romantic date at the beach, kissing as the waves crash, but Milly cautions him to date someone his own age. A month later, Burt waits for her at home and they celebrate his new job at a department store. He proposes in a movie theater, and although she initially refuses, she reconsiders when she sees him walking away.

The next day, the couple is married in Mexico. Yet on the marriage license, he lists his birthplace as Chicago, even though he had told her Racine, Wisconsin. Back home, Burt's ex-wife, Virginia Hanson, arrives, shocking Milly because Burt had claimed he had never been married. Virginia presents a property settlement she wants Burt to sign and warns Milly that Burt has lied about his past. Milly also learns that Mr. Hanson is in Los Angeles to locate him.

Burt is haunted by the day he discovered his wife with his father, and the memory becomes a troubling, recurring presence in his life, leading him to show signs of emotional instability.

When his violence surfaces, Milly has him admitted to a mental hospital. His condition improves with treatment, shown in a restrained montage of intravenous therapy and electroconvulsive sessions, and he slowly severs ties with his past. Milly comes to believe that his love for her remains, and together they look toward a hopeful future.

Autumn Leaves Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Autumn Leaves (1956): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Burt hide his previous marriage from Milly?

Burt lied about being never married because he was deeply ashamed of his past. His ex-wife Virginia revealed that he has a pattern of habitual lying, and his father was looking for him in Los Angeles. The lies stem from his traumatic past, catching his wife with his father, which left him emotionally unstable and prone to deception.

Foreshadowing: The contradiction between his claimed birthplace (Racine, Wisconsin) and the marriage license (Chicago) hints at his pattern of deception from the start.

Q2

What caused Burt's violent breakdown?

Burt's violence was triggered by suppressed trauma from discovering his wife in an affair with his father. This memory haunted him throughout the film, causing paranoia and emotional instability. The stress of his lies unraveling, Virginia's arrival and his father's pursuit, pushed him over the edge.

Why did Milly marry Burt despite the red flags?

Milly fell in love with Burt after their romantic beach date and grew attached during his job search period. Although she initially refused his proposal in the movie theater, she reconsidered when she saw him walking away, feeling guilty and believing in his sincerity.
