The formidable warrior Kaulder (Vin Diesel) is on an unyielding quest to hunt down witches alongside his dedicated allies, the Axe and Cross. With a heavy heart, he is tormented by memories of his deceased wife, Helena (played by Lotte Verbeek), and daughter, Elizabeth (Sloane Coombs). As the men traverse a dense forest, they confront a menacing swarm of witches, engaging in fierce combat. Among them, Kaulder’s primary foe is the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht), and after an intense battle, she casts him into a fiery pit within a colossal tree. Undeterred, he sets his blade ablaze to vanquish the Queen with “iron and fire,” but not before she curses him with immortality, ensuring that his suffering would echo through eternity.
Fast forward 800 years to the year 2015, and Kaulder finds himself aboard a plane, where he crosses paths with the young witch Bronwyn (Bex Taylor-Klaus), who possesses coveted weather runes he desperately seeks. As a storm rages outside, Kaulder uses the runes to pacify the turbulent weather.
In New York City, Kaulder continues his witch-hunting efforts with the Axe and Cross, now assisted by the aging Dolan the 36th (Michael Caine). His successor, known as the 37th (Elijah Wood), is an ambitious young man eager to learn from Kaulder. The 36th hints to the 37th about Kaulder’s intense demeanor and turbulent past.
Tragedy strikes when the 37th calls Kaulder with the grim news of the 36th’s death. Following the Axe and Cross’s memorial service, the 37th embarks on his new role. He reveals a childhood recollection of Kaulder, who had slain the witches responsible for the death of his parents, and expresses a lifelong desire to team up with him.
During their investigation at the 36th’s apartment, Kaulder discovers alarming evidence of dark curses, indicating foul play in the 36th’s death. He and the 37th visit Max Schlesinger’s bakery (Isaach De Bankolé), who has been engaged in dubious dealings with witches. Their inquiries lead them to a warlock named Ellic (Joseph Gilgun), who is under the scrutiny of a witch council led by Glaeser (Rena Owen).
Realizing the 36th is cursed rather than dead, Kaulder unearths bloody clues left in a book regarding “remember your death,” compelling him to seek out the truth through magic. This quest leads him to a witch bar owned by Chloe (Rose Leslie), a synonymously powerful Dreamwalker. As Kaulder requests a memory spell, chaos ensues when a warlock named Belial (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) captures him, setting the bar ablaze after a fierce struggle.
After some turmoil, Chloe aids Kaulder in recollecting his past, revealing critical moments from his previous life. In this immersive journey through his memories, they witness an agonizing revelation: the heart of the Witch Queen remains intact, tied to his immortality and suffering. The painful truth unfolds as Kaulder realizes his allies, the Axe and Cross, have deceived him for years.
With the Witch Queen vengefully resurrected using Ellic as her vessel, pandemonium breaks loose in the city. Kaulder finds himself grappling with his past as he races against time, forced to confront the dark specter of betrayal and the legacies of loss. With Chloe’s support, they battle against the malignant forces unleashed upon humanity.
As the climactic conflict culminates against the Witch Queen, the stakes rise higher—freedom for Kaulder means the ultimate sacrifice, yet with a glimmer of hope, he finds newfound strength. Despite the retaining of his immortality, Kaulder emerges transformed and at peace, determined to forge a new path forward alongside Chloe as they venture forth into the unknown.
