Vishwanathan, an innocent young man from Alappuzha, is mistaken for the dreaded criminal Uthaman just before a job interview and gets arrested. The local police, including his classmate George Kutty, quickly realizes the error and releases him. The incident foreshadows the danger of the doppelganger haunting his life.

George Kutty clarifies that Uthaman is a criminal with a murky past and that many offenses could be misattributed to him. The police have not traced who Uthaman truly is, leaving a shadow of danger over Vishwanathan. Vishwanathan must stay cautious as the case continues.

Because of the mistaken identity, Vishwanathan's sister's marriage proposal falls through, causing social embarrassment for the family. The incident widens the rift between Vishwanathan and his lethargic father, who questions his son's safety and future. The family morale suffers as the rumor of Uthaman lingers.

Vishwanathan secures a job in Kochi and moves there to start anew. He soon falls for his coworker Ambili, hoping the change of scene will help him escape the shadow of Uthaman.

Ambili accidentally encounters Uthaman, who intends to assault her, making her wary of Vishwanathan. Vishwanathan then explains the existence of his doppelganger to break the ice and win her trust. The misunderstanding strains their budding relationship.

A visitor at Vishwanathan's boss Mohandas's office mistakes him for Uthaman, resulting in Vishwanathan losing his job. The incident reinforces how close the real criminal's reputation comes to destroying Vishwanathan's new life.

With a better marriage proposal now lined up for his sister and mounting pressure from his mother, Vishwanathan becomes desperate to face Uthaman directly. He scouts for information on the criminal's whereabouts while trying to keep his own life intact.

Vishwanathan begins to pose as Uthaman to attract a lead and unexpectedly receives a payment that was meant for the real criminal. The ruse earns Uthaman's ire and pulls Vishwanathan deeper into danger.

Carrying the money toward his sister's wedding, Vishwanathan is chased by Uthaman and his goons. In a brutal fight, Uthaman is accidentally stabbed to death by one of his own men, and the body is mistaken for Vishwanathan's because Vishwanathan's bag with his certificates and passbook is found nearby.

Vishwanathan returns home to find his family performing the last rites for Uthaman's corpse, unaware of the truth. The atmosphere is heavy with grief and confusion as the family believes they have said goodbye to Vishwanathan's doppelganger.

That night, Vishwanathan confronts his father, hands over the bag of money, and explains the facts. His father consoles him and urges him to return, but Vishwanathan steadfastly refuses to go, choosing to live as Uthaman to protect his family.

As Vishwanathan heads back toward the city, he glances at the burning pyre with a crooked smile. The final moment leaves viewers wondering whether the one who died was Uthaman or Vishwanathan, and whether the truth will ever come out.
