At CERN, scientists Father Silvano Bentivoglio and Dr. Vittoria Vetra create three canisters of antimatter. The atmosphere shifts dramatically when Vetra discovers Silvano murdered and one canister missing.

A man claiming to represent the Illuminati kidnaps four favored candidates for the papacy. He informs the Vatican through a warning that he will murder each cardinal every hour from 8 p.m. to midnight, setting the stage for a deadly countdown.

American professor Robert Langdon is brought to the Vatican to aid in the investigation due to his expertise with the Priory of Sion. As he hears the assassin's threat, he begins piecing together the clues leading to the cardinal's fate.

Following Langdon's research using Galileo's banned book, he discovers the first altar is the Chigi Chapel. Despite their rush to save Cardinal Ebner, they arrive too late, finding him suffocated and marked with the symbol 'Earth'.

Clues lead Langdon to a Bernini sculpture in St. Peter's Square, where they find Cardinal Lamassé gravely injured. His death reveals the assassin's methodology, as he is branded with 'Air', raising suspicions about the Pope's prior death.

In a race against time, Langdon discovers the final altar at Piazza Navona, leading to a confrontation with the assassin. Although Bishop Baggia's life is saved, they uncover the struggle between his escape and the darkness that looms.

Langdon and Vetra storm Castel Sant'Angelo after realizing Richter's possible conspiracy. Their discovery of the assassin's brands suggests a deeper plot, intensifying the suspense as they confront those orchestrating the chaos.

With the antimatter container located in Saint Peter's tomb, pressure mounts as they learn it is set to explode imminently. McKenna, realizing the magnitude of the disaster, bravely seizes the canister and attempts a daring escape in a helicopter.

Langdon and Vetra uncover documents revealing McKenna's intricate web of deceit and manipulation. The unsettling realization dawns that he orchestrated the entire plot, unveiling a sinister motive behind the chaos.

With McKenna exposed and dead, Cardinal Baggia is elected as the new pope, choosing the name Pope Luke. This decision symbolizes a unification between science and faith, as the church looks to move forward from its recent turmoil.

As Pope Luke steps onto the balcony to greet the crowds, he acknowledges Langdon and Vetra with gratitude. He delivers his first Urbi et Orbi blessing, marking a new beginning for the Vatican and its future.
