In England in 1952, a freight train loaded with naval mines bound for HM Dockyard, Portsmouth, becomes the center of a tense sabotage drama. As it rolls through a Birmingham railyard at night, a man leaps from the carriage and, after a brief scuffle with a railway constable, escapes—leaving behind the bag he carried. Constable Charles Baron inspects the bag’s contents and immediately suspects a saboteur has rigged a bomb to trigger the entire trainload, timed to explode the next morning upon arrival at the dockyard.
The saboteur evades capture, so Baron heads to Portsmouth, certain that he will witness the aftermath. To safe-guard the operation, the authorities divert the train to an abandoned siding and evacuate the nearby area, turning the situation into a meticulous, controlled threat.
The nearest bomb disposal expert is Peter Lyncort, a former army man who lives in Birmingham with his wife, Janine Lyncort. That evening, Janine considers staying put but ultimately leaves for London, only to reconsider and return home, setting off a personal race against time amid the unfolding crisis.
At the station, Janine reconsiders and begins a search for Peter, unaware that he has already been taken to the freight train by local railway security chief Jim Warrilow. Once on site, Lyncort leads the initial inspection and concludes that the bomb is hidden inside one of the mines. He and Warrilow methodically open each mine, examining every chamber until they locate and disable the device shortly after dawn.
Meanwhile, Baron moves to secure the saboteur in Portsmouth and transports him toward the train by helicopter. The saboteur, initially uncooperative, becomes more instructive when handcuffed to the train, warning Warrilow that two delays are set to go off within minutes. As Lyncort continues probing for a second bomb, Janine finally arrives. With time running out, he hurls the second mine into a field, where it detonates harmlessly. The emergency is resolved, and Peter and Janine are reconciled, bringing a rare moment of quiet after the storm.
