The Deceivers

In 1825 India, a nation is riven by the Thuggee, a Kali-worshiping cult known as the Deceivers, whose raids blend robbery with ritual murder. Captain William Savage, [Pierce Brosnan], an upright district administrator for the East India Company, is alerted to the brutal pattern by villagers in Madhya and embarks on a cautious, determined investigation. He captures a Thuggee named Hussein, [Saeed Jaffrey], who agrees to cooperate, but his bureaucratic commanding officer and father-in-law, Colonel Wilson, [Keith Michell], stubbornly clings to Company protocol and relieves Savage of duty.

Undeterred, Savage hatches a daring plan: he disguises himself as the imprisoned native outlaw Gopal the Weaver and, with Hussein’s aid, infiltrates the Thuggee ranks. He is welcomed into their circles and gradually drawn into their raids, compelled to participate in their brutal cycles. A ritualized exchange of a consecrated sugar—implied to be LSD—awakens in him a dark, ecstatic fascination with killing that he has never felt before.

Then a shocking turn occurs when Gopal, revealed to be another Thuggee, appears, and, to avoid exposure, Savage is forced to kill him. He further uncovers a troubling truth: senior British officers know about the Thuggees and allow their passage through districts in return for a share of the loot, a betrayal that corrodes the very ideals Savage serves.

Fearing for Savage’s sanity, Hussein flees to warn Sarah Wilson, [Helena Michell], but Thuggee moles inside the Company intercept him and capture him before he can warn her. As Savage’s secret comes to light, the Thuggees reveal their willingness to accept him as one of their own; yet he is ordered to kill Hussein. Instead, he uses a Thuggee child as a hostage to force an escape, but Hussein is shot dead in the ensuing confrontation.

East India Company troops, alerted by Sarah’s loyal servant, arrive and rout the Thuggee forces. Rehabilitated, Savage is promoted to Colonel and given the official charge of eradicating the Thuggee cult across India, though he must live with the mental and emotional scars left by his undercover experience and the violence he endured.
