Secret Service agent Mike Banning, played by Gerard Butler, undergoes intensive training at a private military facility run by his friend Wade Jennings, portrayed by Danny Huston, a former Army Ranger turned CEO of Salient Global. He is recommended by President Allan Trumbull, played by Morgan Freeman, to step in as the Director of the Secret Service following retiring Director David Gentry, enacted by Lance Reddick. Despite grappling with migraines and insomnia, which he conceals through visits to various doctors, Mike begins to rely on medication for persistent back pain.
As the President enjoys a fishing retreat, their security detail is ruthlessly attacked by armed drones, leaving only Banning to save Trumbull, who ends up in a coma. As the investigation unfolds, FBI Agent Helen Thompson, played by Jada Pinkett Smith, uncovers alarming evidence that suggests Banning might have orchestrated the attack, including his DNA found at the scene and a mysterious $10 million transfer into his accounts from a state-owned Russian bank. This shocking discovery leads to Banning’s arrest.
While en route to detention, Banning’s transport is ambushed. He manages to elude capture, brutally taking out the attackers, who turn out to be agents from his own training exercise. Realizing that Jennings has double-crossed him, Banning reaches out to his wife Leah, played by Piper Perabo, informing her of his survival. This communication is intercepted, triggering a frantic car chase led by Thompson. Banning narrowly escapes and retreats to his father’s home in the woods.
With Trumbull still unconscious, Vice President Martin Kirby, enacted by Tim Blake Nelson, is sworn in as Acting President. From a surveillance feed, Banning and his father Clay, portrayed by Nick Nolte, witness Jennings’ henchmen approaching. To protect themselves, Clay uses explosives to eliminate the intruders, while Banning reveals his family situation to his father. In the meantime, Jennings’ men are hunting for Leah and their daughter, but Clay intervenes just in time.
Meanwhile, Kirby publicly accuses Banning of the assassination attempt, secretly collaborating with Jennings. As Thompson discovers the bodies around Clay’s cabin, she begins to suspect Banning’s innocence. In a dramatic turn, Trumbull awakens, and it becomes clear that Kirby is colluding with Jennings, plotting to retaliate against Russia for the supposed attack on the President.
Banning is captured at the hospital but is freed at Trumbull’s command. Rallying his strength, he guides Trumbull and Gentry, who remains loyal, to safety as Jennings escalates the situation, intentionally causing an explosion in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. In a heart-pounding showdown, Banning confronts Jennings, ultimately leading to a lethal hand-to-hand battle where Banning stabs Jennings fatally.
In the aftermath, Banning is cleared of all accusations, while Trumbull and Gentry take decisive action to arrest Kirby for treason, all while unraveling Jennings’ insurance policy against them. To bring his story full circle, Clay opts to stay with Banning and his family. Despite his guilt over failing to protect Trumbull and his undisclosed health issues, Banning contemplates resignation. However, Trumbull, understanding the weight of his burdens, forgives him and extends the director position of the Secret Service to Banning, who gratefully accepts the new role.
