In October 2004, a New York Army National Guard unit is getting ready for a deployment to Iraq. First Lieutenant Danny Selfton, the executive officer of his company, is unexpectedly reassigned to a non-deploying public affairs unit because of his politically influential father, yet he stays on hand to assist with the final preparations and keep things moving smoothly.
Specialist Reyes, a combat medic in the same unit, hopes for a compassionate reassignment so his son can get needed medical care for lung cancer. His request is denied by battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Owens, who explains that Reyes’s medical skills are essential for the upcoming deployment, leaving Reyes with a painful choice between duty and his family.
Not willing to leave his son behind, Reyes presses Selfton to help him devise a plan to slip away on a departing supply convoy. Selfton’s replacement, First Lieutenant Chambers, accompanies him to the convoy, while Staff Sergeant Hart, Reyes’s platoon sergeant, discovers that Reyes is missing. The tension rises as the plan to depart the base is set in motion, and the two officers brace for the consequences.
They manage to flee the convoy area and search for another route off base, but trouble quickly follows. Selfton is caught trying to contact Reyes’s cousin on a pay phone and is arrested by military police, a setback that tests his resolve and loyalty. The pursuit intensifies as the base tightens around any attempt to break away from the deployment schedule.
Captain Angelo, the company commander, orders Selfton to reveal Reyes’s location. Selfton leads him to where Reyes is hidden, but a distraction caused by another soldier gives Selfton a narrow chance to slip away and reunite with Reyes. The two men intensify their escape plan, and Selfton helps Reyes reach his cousin, triggering a further diversion that allows Reyes to flee again. In the heat of the escape, Chambers attacks Selfton, and the fight draws in MPs who arrest them once more. Reyes, seizing a last opportunity, climbs the fence and escapes with his cousin before capture.
The next day, Selfton faces charges as he is brought in front of the company in handcuffs. At the same time, a military police car arrives with Reyes, who had been taken into custody earlier while with his son. Selfton is escorted to the office of LTC Owens, who decides to drop all charges to avoid negative press for the National Guard. Before the dismissal, Selfton asks to stay with the unit and deploy with them, a request that is granted and that signals the beginning of a new chapter for him.
With the decision made, Selfton bids farewell to his fiancée Leela and steps onto the back of one of the departing trucks, choosing to continue the mission alongside his comrades rather than walk away from the deployment. The story follows a tense, morally fraught sequence of decisions, loyalties, and the costs of trying to balance duty with personal obligations, all set against the backdrop of a unit preparing to answer the call to serve abroad.
