Ending explained
What Happens at the End of Assassin?
How Assassin (2023) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
At the end of "Assassin," after a tense series of events, Alexa manages to locate and kill Adrian Delorio, which results in Sebastian’s consciousness returning to his own body. However, his reawakening is emotionally devastating. Sebastian, overwhelmed and disoriented, cannot recognize his own body, as his mind has become so confused from the constant transfers of consciousness. This disconnect between body and self leads him to react violently, even pulling a gun on Olivia, indicating how deeply disturbed he is by this loss of identity. Alexa, having waited in hope, is heartbroken to see him like this and ends up shooting him to prevent further chaos.
What makes this ending particularly tragic is the idea that Sebastian’s consciousness, having been transferred multiple times, is no longer rooted in a single, stable identity. Instead, it’s fractured, showing how dangerous such technology could be if misused—especially in the context of future warfare, where consciousness could be weaponized or manipulated. The film hints at a future where human minds could serve as controllable drones, raising fears about the erosion of free will and the potential for catastrophic misuse.

In the aftermath, the story leaves us with a curious twist: Mali’s consciousness, now supporting Alexa’s and living with her, suggests that their shared consciousness might eventually become indistinguishable or overwhelming. They are shown to be together with a child—born from their combined consciousness—yet this also hints at an unstable future where multiple minds could merge into one, raising questions about identity, sanity, and what it truly means to be oneself. The ending leaves viewers pondering whether such a future is hopeful or ominous, emphasizing that as humanity develops increasingly advanced consciousness transfer technology, it risks losing the very essence of individual identity and autonomy.**
