Adventure in Sahara

Jim Wilson receives a telegram announcing his brother's death in the French Foreign Legion. He decides to enlist to honor his brother and requests to be assigned to the hard-edged commander Savatt. This telegram sets the course for Jim's new path.

The Legion marches toward their next outpost. They encounter a dying soldier who quickly reveals that he deserted and had no choice, warning of the harsh realities ahead. His confession foreshadows the brutality the unit will endure.

Savatt, the new commander, proves abusive and humiliating toward his men. An ill soldier tries to strike him with a shovel; the man collapses and dies, underscoring the brutal environment Jim joins. The scene foreshadows the consequences of rebellion.

Savatt orders a long, grueling march for the men. On their return to the fort, Arab forces attack, but the assailants are repelled and retreat back into the desert. The confrontation intensifies the sense of danger surrounding the Legion.

One soldier is punished with constant patrol on the wall, and Jim openly accuses Savatt of killing him. In retaliation, Jim is arrested and placed in solitary confinement. The injustice fuels his resolve and resentment toward Savatt.

A fellow soldier sneaks Jim food during confinement. After the punishment ends, Jim re-enters duty and joins a patrol. They spot a plane, but Arabs reach the area first; the Legion arrives in time to rescue the pilot, who is Jim's fiancée Carla Preston.

Savatt singles out Jim for disrespect toward Carla and orders him to stand duty at the wall all day. The harsh assignment compounds Jim's resentment and sets the stage for further action against authority.

The men decide to mutiny by taking Savatt to the guardhouse and presenting the officers with a choice to follow them or Savatt. The officers ultimately choose to stay with Savatt, rejecting the mutineers’ cause. The mutiny's initial dramatic pivot escalates tensions inside the fortress.

To secure supplies for their desert trek, the mutineers forge the lieutenant's signature and obtain orders for a 150 km march. Two men also disguise themselves as Arabs and depart with the forged documents, complicating loyalties and plans.

Carla Preston learns what Jim has done and that he faces a court-martial. Karnoldi arrives at Carla's quarters, where she fights him off as Jim arrives, blending personal danger with the political crisis unfolding.

Savatt kills an Arab and dresses like him to slip past enemy lines. He reaches the next fort and reports the mutiny to his superiors, maintaining his grip on power while the mutiny's legitimacy is hotly contested.

Arabs attack as loyal troops and Savatt's force converge on the fort; Jim's men and the Legionnaires open the gates to allow the relief force inside. After the clash, the mutineers are tried, with the lieutenant testifying against Savatt and accusing him of crimes. The men are sentenced to four months in prison and discharge; Jim vows to serve his four months, and Carla promises to be there when he gets out.
