Doctor Burnet, a meticulous scholar of ancient history at the British Museum, becomes consumed by the chase for the legendary and priceless Golden Mask of Moloch, believed to sleep in the long-forgotten tomb of a Roman general buried somewhere deep in the Algerian desert. He plans another expedition, yet funds are tight, making it hard to hire an archaeologist to accompany him. The museum curator hints that Nicholas Chapman, an American author famous for accessible archaeology books, is eager to join without pay, on the understanding that he can publish his discoveries in magazines and later in book form. Burnet remains skeptical about Chapman’s expertise and sincerity, but ultimately agrees to bring him along, hoping the collaboration will add both momentum and a ready-made audience to the project.

Unknown to them, the journey is watched by two unscrupulous fortune hunters, Petris and his elusive partner Kress. They are every bit as determined to seize the mask for money, and their presence aboard the flight to Algiers shades the expedition with a dangerous geometry of greed and risk.

In Algiers, Burnet reconnects with his daughter Anne Burnet and her boyfriend Jacques Farnod, whose father serves as the curator of the local museum of antiquities. Chapman finds himself drawn to Anne, though she initially resists his forward nature. The pair wander through the ruined remnants of Carthage, where Anne’s view softens as she witnesses how Chapman treats local children with kindness and patience, revealing a gentler side beneath his brash exterior.

That evening, Chapman slips away to a nightclub, where [Kress] takes immediate aim at him, feeding him drinks and introducing him to a sultry belly dancer. The night ends on a high note for Chapman, but the following morning he returns to a hotel room that has been rummaged through and his maps stolen, casting a shadow of mistrust over the expedition and underscoring the ever-present danger of their quest.

The journey unfolds across the Sahara by camel, a trek marked by punishing windstorms and hostile desert tribes. The party presses on toward the secret tombs and, in the heat of the excavation, a collapsing roof nearly ends their mission. Just when hope seems thin, Petris and Kress reappear, forcing Chapman to divulge the tomb’s location. They hatch a ruthless plan to kill Burnet and his team to claim the mask for themselves, but Chapman proves capable and resourceful enough to thwart them, shifting the balance of danger back in their favor and ensuring the expedition’s survival.

With the threat neutralized, the mask is finally located and secured. Anne’s feelings crystallize into love for Chapman, a revelation that harmonizes with Jacques’s magnanimous recognition that they make a good match. Burnet, confronted with the consequences of his earlier skepticism, acknowledges Chapman’s genuine credentials and begins the responsible task of transferring the mask safely to London, closing a chapter that tested trust, courage, and the boundaries between science and ambition.
