In a quiet village, a 16-year-old girl named Mayil imagines a future as a teacher and a more stable life with an educated partner. She lives with her mother, Guruvammal Ganthimathi, a devoted caretaker who also looks after a limping orphan who is dismissed by the villagers as “Chappani” Kamal Haasan. Mayil’s world is a careful balance of duty, ambition, and quiet longing.
Mayil hopes to marry a refined, educated man, and she cherishes the dream of a respectable career as a teacher. Though Chappani loves Mayil, she does not return his feelings, holding fast to her own aspirations. The arrival of an urban veterinarian, Sathyajith, shakes her sense of possibility. He arrives in the village, and Mayil finds herself drawn to him, believing he might be the right partner. She even turns down a chance to attend a teacher-training course in Madras so she can stay with him. Yet, despite her feelings, she cannot accept his lack of commitment or his willingness to treat their relationship casually, and Sathyajith makes it clear that he does not intend a serious, monogamous life with her.
Mayil’s confession to her mother triggers a swift, practical response. Guruvammal wastes no time in arranging a betrothal for Mayil to someone else in the face of the social pressure and rumors. The village needles Mayil with gossip, much of it propelled by Parattaiyan [Rajinikanth], a bold and dangerous figure who longs for Mayil and uses every opportunity to undermine her. The atmosphere grows tense and hostile, and Mayil’s engagement prospects fade under the weight of suspicion and shame.
Tragically, Guruvammal dies under the strain of these events, leaving Chappani to step in as Mayil’s protector. He becomes a steady presence in her life, lifting her spirits and gaining confidence and manners that surprise the village. Mayil encourages him to stand up for himself, even telling him to slap anyone who calls him “Chappani” and to respond only to those who address him by his proper name, Gopalakrishnan. When Sathyajith and Parattaiyan mock him, Gopalakrishnan does not hesitate to defend himself, and Mayil’s faith in him grows.
Mayil’s feelings begin to shift again as she and Gopalakrishnan grow closer. She decides to marry him, sending him to a nearby town to buy wedding supplies while she remains in the village to prepare. In the meantime, Parattaiyan, still bent on his claim, comes to Mayil’s house and makes a brutal attempt to assault her. Gopalakrishnan returns just in time to plead with Parattaiyan to stop, but the criminal refuses. In a moment of desperate defense, Gopalakrishnan kills Parattaiyan with a rock and is arrested for the act. He promises Mayil that he will return to her, and she waits, holding onto the hope that their bond will endure beyond the violence and the long years ahead.
