What Happens in Exit: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Exit (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Yong-nam, once among the best rock climbers in his college years, is now a grown man who is unemployed and living with his parents just to get by. His older sister, Jung-hyun, keeps nudging him to clean up his act and make a real impression as their mother’s 70th birthday approaches. For the celebration, Yong-nam pushes to hold the party at the Cloud Garden, secretly hoping that his old crush and fellow climber, Eui-joo, is on site. To make an impression, he fabricates a story about a successful career, leaving Eui-joo surprised and curious when she confronts the truth.

As events unfold, a terrorist drives a truck near the Cloud Garden and releases a toxic white gas, triggering chaos and panic across the area. While the city reels, Eui-joo learns from a close friend that Yong-nam’s boast about his job was a lie, deepening the tension between them and sparking questions about his character and motives.

The family is jolted from their focus on the birthday as the white gas spreads, and with Eui-joo’s urging, they rush back toward the Cloud Garden. Jung-hyun is overwhelmed by the gas, throwing the entire group into a rush for safety. The situation deteriorates quickly, and they crowd onto the roof, only to discover the door is locked, trapping them inside.

In a tense bid for safety, Yong-nam shatters a window and swings to an adjacent building with little more than a makeshift harness to steady him. He manages to scale the outer wall, reach the top, and open a path for his family. From there, they signal for help with improvised SOS signals and manage to attract the attention of a passing rescue helicopter. But the weight of Yong-nam and Eui-joo aboard would push the capacity beyond its limit, forcing a heartbreaking decision to leave one of them behind temporarily.

Separated but resolute, Yong-nam and Eui-joo turn to increasingly dangerous alternatives as the gas continues to rise. They improvise safety gear to cope with the toxic environment and move to higher ground, hoping to secure a better chance at rescue. They find a taller building from which to signal another helicopter, only to witness a group of students trapped in a nearby structure that needs help just as a petrol station explodes, sending another violent surge of gas through the area.

With time running short, Yong-nam and Eui-joo realize they must reach a high point that can offer a safe escape—the tower crane, the tallest landmark in the vicinity. A drone appears on their path, providing real-time directions toward the crane and helping them navigate a perilous urban maze. They race across a series of rooftops as the drone powers down, leaving them momentarily stranded. Just when hope seems dim, more drones descend toward them, and Yong-nam uses one of them to anchor a rope between buildings, attempting a daring swing to the crane.

The plan teeters on the edge of disaster when their combined weight proves too much for the drone technology supporting the rope, and the two seemingly plummet to the street below. Miraculously, they survive the fall and clamber onto the tower crane, where a rescue helicopter finally reaches them and extracts them to safety.

Back on solid ground, Yong-nam reunites tearfully with his family, relieved and chastened by the ordeal. As he and Eui-joo exchange a grateful look, they acknowledge the possibility of meeting again in the future. The city continues to breathe as rainfall begins to descend, gradually washing away the last traces of the white gas and signaling a fragile sense of renewal after the crisis. The experience leaves Yong-nam with a renewed sense of responsibility and a clearer view of what truly matters in life.

Exit Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Exit (2020): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Yong-nam lie to Eui-joo about having a successful career?

Yong-nam lied about his career because he wanted to impress Eui-joo, whom he still had feelings for since their college climbing days. Being unemployed and living with his parents made him feel inadequate, so he fabricated a story about success to appear worthy of her attention. This lie creates tension later when Eui-joo discovers the truth during the crisis.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Yong-nam's sister Jung-hyun pressures him to clean up his act, hinting at his struggles with responsibility.

Q2

Why was the rooftop door locked at Cloud Garden?

The rooftop door was locked as part of the building's security measures, a common feature in many commercial buildings to prevent unauthorized access. This locked door traps Yong-nam's family initially, forcing Yong-nam to take the dangerous route of shattering a window and swinging to an adjacent building to find another way up.

Q3

How did the toxic white gas spread so fast across the city?

A terrorist drove a truck near Cloud Garden and released the toxic white gas directly into the crowded area. The gas appears to be heavier than air, causing it to spread rapidly through the streets and into buildings. The film shows people quickly overcome by the fumes, with the gas pockets intensifying as it spreads, forcing survivors to constantly move to higher ground.

Q4

Why couldn't Yong-nam and Eui-joo board the first rescue helicopter?

The rescue helicopter had a strict weight limit that was already exceeded by Yong-nam's family members. When Yong-nam and Eui-joo attempted to board, their combined weight would have pushed the helicopter beyond its safe capacity, forcing them to make the heartbreaking decision to stay behind while the others were evacuated first.

Q5

How did Yong-nam and Eui-joo survive falling from the buildings?

When their improvised rope crossing failed under their combined weight, Yong-nam and Eui-joo fell from a significant height. The film depicts this as a moment where they miraculously survive, landing on what appears to be a lower structure or debris that breaks their fall before they clamber onto the tower crane. This survival is played as a fortunate escape rather than explained in detail.

Foreshadowing: The drones had been guiding them toward the tower crane as the safest high point, hinting at the importance of that location.

Q6

What happened to the terrorist who released the toxic gas?

The film does not show what happened to the terrorist after the initial attack. The narrative focuses entirely on the survivors' escape attempts rather than on the perpetrator or the broader political context of the attack. The terrorist's truck is seen at the beginning, but the character is not followed or captured on screen.

  • gas attack
  • truck
  • attacker
Q7

How did the drones help Yong-nam and Eui-joo escape?

A drone spotted Yong-nam and Eui-joo and provided real-time directional guidance toward the tower crane, the highest point in the area that offered the best chance for rescue. Multiple drones converged to assist them, with Yong-nam using one drone to anchor a rope between buildings for his dangerous crossing attempt. When the drones' power waned, they lost navigation support temporarily.

Q8

Why was the tower crane the best escape point from the toxic gas?

The tower crane was the tallest structure in the vicinity, allowing Yong-nam and Eui-joo to get above the rising toxic gas. Since the gas appears to settle in lower areas and pockets, reaching high ground was their only chance for survival until a rescue helicopter could reach them. The crane also provided an open space where a helicopter could safely perform a rescue operation.

Q9

Do Yong-nam and Eui-joo end up together at the end?

The film ends with Yong-nam and Eui-joo sharing a hopeful glance after being rescued and reuniting with Yong-nam's family. They exchange a grateful look and agree to meet again someday, suggesting the possibility of a future relationship. The ending leaves their romantic fate open but positive, with the shared trauma potentially bringing them closer.

Foreshadowing: Throughout the film, Eui-joo confronts Yong-nam about his lie, showing she still cares about him despite his deception.

Q10

Why were Yong-nam's rock climbing skills important in the escape?

Yong-nam was once among the best rock climbers in college, and his climbing abilities became crucial during the crisis. He used his strength and technique to scale walls, swing between buildings with a makeshift harness, and climb the tower crane, all physically demanding tasks that would have been impossible for someone without his training. His skills directly saved his family's lives and his own.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes his climbing background early, showing he's physically capable of the dangerous maneuvers required during the emergency.

Q11

What caused the gas pockets to intensify during the escape?

The toxic gas appears to spread and intensify continuously throughout the film, with new pockets forming as the crisis progresses. At one point, a petrol station explodes, sending another violent surge of gas through the area. The gas is shown to be reactive to explosions and potentially to environmental factors, creating new waves of danger that force Yong-nam and Eui-joo to keep moving to higher ground.

Q12

Why did Yong-nam and Eui-joo get separated from the family during rescue?

Yong-nam and Eui-joo were separated from the family because the first rescue helicopter could not take everyone due to weight limits. The family was evacuated first while Yong-nam and Eui-joo stayed behind to find another way to safety. They eventually reached the tower crane where a second helicopter rescued them, allowing them to reunite with the family back on solid ground.
