In the quaint town of Fraziers Bottom, West Virginia, employees of the local Piggly Wiggly—Rosalee, Cathy, and Pete—gather around their television, captivated by the emotional film they are watching. As the nurse’s heartfelt plea for forgiveness brings tears to the women’s eyes, a stoic Pete remains unfazed.

Amidst their admiration for the film star Tad Hamilton, the audience is drawn into the chaotic reality of his off-screen life, where his agent describes Tad’s reckless behavior: > “drinking, driving, smoking, leering, and groping all at once.” Convinced that his untamed lifestyle is ruining his reputation and career, Tad’s team devises a plan to rehabilitate his image through a fan competition that offers a date with him, all while raising funds for the charity Save the Children.

Rosalee stumbles upon this online opportunity and, with support from her co-workers, customers, and the somewhat reluctant Pete, they manage to collect the $100 entry fee. As Pete prepares to leave for college in Richmond, he shares his plans with his superior, hinting at deeper feelings stirring within him.

When Rosalee wins the contest and secures a date with Tad Hamilton, the news media swarms her home, and a dejected Pete watches her depart for the airport. In Los Angeles, Rosalee is both entranced and overwhelmed, her awkwardness around Tad highlighting the disparity between her small-town roots and his glamorous lifestyle. Their date takes a turn for the worse when she becomes ill in the limousine, and Tad’s offhand comments about his love for animals provoke suspicion in Rosalee, echoing Pete’s earlier warnings.

Soon after, Pete makes plans to escape to Richmond, deeper in the wilderness of his own heartache.

With turmoil still fresh from recent emotions, Rosalee hops in her car, racing towards Richmond to confront Pete. Their paths converge just as Pete steps out of his vehicle, reminiscent of their initial meeting. Standing together, both are on the brink of a new journey.
