After realizing there are no beavers on his side, Grey Beaver decides to trade his sled dog Kiche to a man named William in exchange for access to richer land. This decision reflects the dire circumstances he faces.

While on their journey to Fort Yukon, Grey Beaver and White Fang encounter Beauty Smith again. Smith coerces Grey Beaver into selling White Fang under threat, highlighting the relentless pursuit of power over the wolfdog.
