The film opens at a beauty pageant in Bodeen, Texas, where Bliss Cavendar, a 17-year-old girl, is a contestant. She is in a state of panic backstage trying to remove blue hair dye, a result of a dare from her friend Pash, leading to her debut on stage with vibrant blue hair and subsequent defeat.

After the disappointing pageant, Bliss and her mother, Brooke, go shopping in Austin to cheer Bliss up. During their trip, Bliss becomes fascinated by the energy of roller-derby girls promoting their team, which sparks her interest in the sport.

Bliss convinces Pash to accompany her to an exhibition derby match, where she sees the Hurl Scouts in action. Despite the team's loss, Bliss is inspired by the spirit of the skaters, especially Maggie Mayhem, who encourages her to be her own hero.

Determined to join the Hurl Scouts, Bliss lies about her age during the tryouts. Razor McGee recognizes her talent and invites her to join the team, marking the beginning of her roller derby journey.

Bliss plays in her first game with the Hurl Scouts, but they suffer a loss. Despite this setback, she finds joy at an after-party where she connects with Oliver, a charming musician who appreciates her taste in music.
