Bring It On

Torrance Shipman, played by Kirsten Dunst, is filled with excitement and anxiety as she embarks on her senior year. Living with her parents, Bruce and Christine, along with her brother Justin, she is determined to make her cheerleading squad, the Toros, champions once again. With her boyfriend Aaron away at college and expecting Torrance to join him soon, she finds herself stepping into the role of captain after “Big Red” graduates.

As she navigates the dynamics of her team, which includes outspoken Courtney, sassy Whitney, wealthy Darcy, shy Kasey, and the overenthusiastic boy cheerleader Jan, Torrance must contend with the challenge of keeping morale high when tensions arise. Christine, her mother, worries for Torrance’s academics and pressures her to prioritize her studies over cheerleading. Although Torrance insists she’s not a genius, her mom’s concerns prompt her to take Advanced Chemistry.

Tragedy strikes when a fellow cheerleader, Carver, sustains an injury during a practice routine, leaving the team in search of a replacement just weeks before regionals. Enter Missy Pantone, portrayed by Eliza Dushku, a talented gymnast who reluctantly joins the Toros after Torrance promises her the opportunity to be part of a national sports team.

As practice progresses, Missy discovers that the Toros have been copying routines from the East Compton Clovers, a rival cheerleading team. Driven to uncover the truth, Torrance and Missy drive to Los Angeles, where they witness the Clovers perform identical routines. This revelation sends Torrance into a panic, especially after learning that their former captain, Big Red, had been secretly stealing choreography.

With the Clovers vowing to defeat the Toros at nationals, tensions rise. When confronted, Torrance assures Isis, the Clovers’ captain, that she was unaware of the unethical practices that had taken place. Meanwhile, as Torrance juggles her captaincy, she also finds herself growing closer to Cliff, Missy’s brother, as Aaron’s support wanes.

As the Toros face embarrassment when the Clovers replicate their routine at a home game, Torrance realizes they must create something new. With renewed determination and help from her team, which includes organizing a fundraiser, they enlist choreographer Sparky Polastri to prepare for competition. Although his rigorous regimen takes a toll on them, the squad rallies together, developing a new routine just in time.

During regionals, the pressure intensifies when the Toros have to compete using a routine that many teams are utilizing. Just days before finals, Torrance receives criticism from Big Red and doubts her abilities as a leader. Encouraged by Cliff’s support, Torrance navigates this tumultuous time, eventually breaking up with Aaron for his lack of support and infidelity.

Meanwhile, as the Clovers face their own financial barriers, Torrance steps in, offering her father’s sponsorship. However, the Clovers refuse the money, ultimately raising their own funds through community support. As the nationals arrive, both teams find themselves in the finals, and Cliff makes a surprise appearance to support Torrance.

In a fierce competition, the Clovers clinch the championship title, while the Toros finish second. Despite the loss, the teams share mutual respect, with Torrance acknowledging the Clovers’ deserving victory. As the season comes to a close, Torrance and Cliff seal their connection with a heartfelt kiss, marking the end of a transformative year.
