West of the Pecos

Colonel Lambreth, plagued by failing health, agrees to leave Chicago's meat-packing business behind. Rill persuades him that a fresh start on the Texas cattle ranch will improve his condition. Her fiancé Clyde Corbin stays behind in the city to manage what remains of the business.

While on the trail, Pecos Smith and Chito Rafferty ride up to the Lambreths' stagecoach and collect payment from Tex Evans. The coach is suddenly attacked by bandits, and Tex is mortally wounded. Before he dies, Tex identifies Sam Sawtelle as the shooter.

After the attack, the stage continues to town with Jeff Slinger driving. In town, Rill endures harassment and quietly disguises herself by tucking her hair into her hat to pass as a boy so she can be left alone.

Brad Sawtelle, Sam's brother, organizes a posse of vigilantes to track Tex's killer. He makes finding the perpetrator a top priority, stirring tensions in the area. The search puts Pecos and the Lambreths under pressure as rumors swirl.

Pecos reaches Sam Sawtelle first and shoots him, cutting off his chance to defend himself. Sam dies, leaving the killer's identity unresolved for the moment and adding fuel to the chase.

Colonel Lambreth and Rill become lost en route to their ranch. Pecos and Chito come to their aid and guide them to safety. In gratitude, the Lambreths offer Pecos and Chito jobs on the property.

Chito Rafferty tries to woo Suzanne, the Lambreths' maid. Pecos, meanwhile, does not yet know that Rill is a woman, which adds tension to their developing rapport. The mistaken identities complicate several interactions around the ranch and town.

Clyde Corbin travels to Texas and senses that Rill's heart is now drawn to someone else. He contemplates his options as the triangle of feelings grows more complicated.

Brad and his men believe Pecos to be an accomplice in the stagecoach robbery and murder. The case against Pecos tightens as rumors spread and the posse presses their hunt. Pecos must clear his name under growing scrutiny.

Pecos proves that Slinger, not Pecos, was responsible for the robbery and murder. In a sharp reversal, Slinger is shot dead by Brad, ending the immediate investigation into Tex's killer.

With Slinger exposed and Brad arrested, law and order are restored in the community. In the aftermath, Rill and Pecos grow closer as they finally acknowledge their feelings for each other.
