Colonel Col. Lambeth’s health is poor, so his daughter Rill Lambeth persuades him to leave behind their Chicago meat-packing business and settle on the family Texas cattle ranch. Her fiancé, a lawyer named Clyde Corbin, remains behind in the city, setting the stage for a life far from the industrial bustle he knows.

On the trail, Pecos Smith and his loyal sidekick Chito Rafferty ride up to the Lambreths’ stagecoach, where Pecos collects the payment for cattle from Tex Evans before Tex is shot during a bandit raid.
