Song of Arizona

Gabby Whittaker is in trouble with the bank, which is run by Dolly Finnuccin. He hasn’t made a payment in seven months and owes $25,000 on a loan due in one week, money he borrowed to start Half-A-Chance Ranch for homeless boys in Lodestone, Arizona. It’s graduation week for the boys, and alumni Roy Rogers has stopped by with graduation presents. The ranch hums with activity and a shared sense of family, punctuated by music that underscores the story, including a medley around friendship and the ranch’s spirit: When a Fellow Needs a Friend and Half a Chance Ranch.

One of the boys at the ranch is Chip Blaine, son of bank robber King Blaine, who has been sending him packages. King stops by to see Chip but leaves quickly when the sheriff arrives. In a tense pursuit, the sheriff mortally wounds him. Before dying, King tells Gabby that he owns a Kansas City garage and wants to bequeath it so the money can be sold to pay off the loan. He asks Roy to visit his stepdaughter, Clare Summers, and deliver a letter from him.

Roy tracks down Clare at a club where she sings, delivering the news and King’s letter after a duet with Clare, a moment that softens the hard edges of the case. Clare’s presence brings warmth to the situation, and the letter hints that there’s money set aside for both Clare and Chip to share. The scene is complemented by the musical backdrop of the club’s performances, including Round and Around – The Lariat Song and a heartfelt rendition of Did You Ever Get That Feeling in the Moonlight.

After King’s death, two of his gang visit Chip and press him to meet them later, arguing that half of King’s money should belong to them. When a horse goes missing, Gabby, Roy, and the Pioneer crew ride out to the ranch and engage in a decisive showdown with the gang. Chip becomes a key figure in the night’s danger, using his wits to navigate a tense confrontation in which he is briefly used as a decoy by the gang.

Back at the Half-A-Chance, Clare stops by and questions Chip, who insists he doesn’t know about any money. He later checks the packages King had been sending and discovers the missing funds. He discreetly drops off the money at Dolly Finnuccin’s house, attaching a note that Gabby had written. Roy, aware of Gabby’s integrity, tells him he’ll think carefully about how to handle the situation since Gabby wouldn’t want to accept “dirty” money.

As the party continues, Dolly and the sheriff arrive to arrest Gabby, believing he paid off the loan. Chip steps forward and confesses that he dropped off the money, clearing Gabby’s name. Yet King’s old gang returns to steal the money, forcing Roy and his men to pursue and capture them. With the recovered funds, Dolly forgives the loan on the Half-A-Chance and even funds a makeover for the ranch. In a final moment of celebration, Roy is invited to lead off a song of victory, joined by Clare and the boys in the rousing finale, Song of Arizona.
