In a distant future, the polar ice caps have melted catastrophically, leading to devastating sea level rises that submerge every continent. This environmental disaster forces humanity's survivors to adapt to life on isolated communities formed by fragile artificial islands and aging ships.

Among the survivors, we meet the enigmatic Mariner, a solitary figure who roams the endless waters aboard his trimaran. His unusual physical traits, including webbed feet and gills, set him apart and create suspicion among others he encounters.

Upon reaching a floating atoll in search of dirt—a rare and precious commodity—the Mariner is met with hostility. The inhabitants, terrified of his mutant nature, vote to dispose of him in a toxic brine pool, showcasing the desperation of their circumstances.

A violent invasion occurs when pirate raiders known as the Smokers descend upon the atoll, driven by the search for an orphan girl named Enola. Unbeknownst to the Mariner, Enola holds a vital map to the elusive Dryland tattooed on her back, making her a prime target.

Enola and her protector, Helen, devise a plan with the atoll’s inventor, Gregor, to escape the Smokers' clutch. However, the plan quickly falls apart, forcing them to seek refuge with the Mariner, who is hesitant yet compelled to assist them.

The Mariner, Enola, and Helen experience ongoing skirmishes as they are pursued by the Deacon, the fierce leader of the Smokers. Tensions escalate when a confrontation leads to damage on the Mariner's trimaran, inciting his frustration and resentment.

Despite their rocky start, the Mariner begins to bond with Helen and Enola. He teaches Enola how to swim, showcasing his growing attachment to them and deepening their fragile alliance amidst the chaos surrounding them.

Curiosity about the Mariner's world sparks an underwater exploration of submerged ruins that were once the city of Denver. While collecting dirt for trade, they encounter new threats, reminding them of the constant dangers lurking in their world.

A surprise attack by the Smokers leads to the destruction of the Mariner’s vessel and the abduction of Enola. This pivotal moment plunges the trio into deeper peril, emphasizing the stakes involved.

With Gregor's help, they decipher the coordinates leading to Dryland, ultimately arriving at what appears to be the top of Mount Everest, miraculously still above water. This discovery serves as a moment of hope and realization for the group.
