A few months after Balto Maurice LaMarche’s heroic journey, Balto and his mate Jenna Jodi Benson welcome a litter of six puppies in Alaska. Five of the pups resemble their mother, while the sixth, Aleu Lacey Chabert, inherits her father’s striking wolfdog features. When the puppies reach eight weeks old, all but Aleu are adopted into new homes, and Aleu’s wild appearance deters potential adopters, leaving her to stay with her father.
A year later, Aleu grows into a young wolf-dog hybrid and is nearly killed by a hunter who mistakes her for a wild wolf. Balto explains her true wolf heritage to Aleu, which deepens her confusion and drives her to run away in search of a place where she truly belongs. Balto sets out into the Alaskan wilderness to find her, all while wrestling with strange dreams of a raven and a pack of wolves whose meaning remains elusive. He resolves to decipher these dreams as he pursues the daughter he loves.
Balto’s friends— Boris [Charles Fleischer], Muk [Kevin Schon], and Luk [Kevin Schon]—try to join the pursuit, but an unseen force seems to require that this journey be a father-and-daughter mission, underscoring the theme of self-discovery and belonging. In a cave, Aleu meets Muru [Peter MacNicol], a field mouse who serves as her spirit guide. Muru counsels Aleu not to be ashamed of her lineage, telling her what she is while hinting that identity is a journey of self-knowledge that she must undertake herself.
The pair reunites when Balto rescues Aleu from a grizzly bear, and they press on toward the ocean. Along the way, Balto is haunted by the dreams that started his quest, while Aleu learns to trust in the guidance she’s receiving from her new ally. Their bond grows as they navigate the dangers of the frontier and the lure of the unknown.
Their trek leads them to the edge of the sea, where they’re confronted by a starving Northwestern wolf pack led by Niju [Mark Hamill], a proud and ruthless rival who believes the wild is the only path to survival. The pack’s advance is checked by the elderly Nava [David Carradine], the true leader who senses a larger destiny at play. Nava speaks of dream visions in which the caribou herd, a crucial winter source, has moved across the ocean and will not return. He also hints at a new leader, “the wolf who does not yet know,” who may rise to guide them—an apparition Balto appears to fit, given his half-wolf heritage.
Niju refuses to abandon his homeland and begins preying on other animal clans to stockpile resources for the winter, escalating the tension between the wolves and their neighbors. Aleu experiences a dream vision of the caribou crossing a vast ice-floe bridge, a vision that foreshadows the path ahead. The next morning, Niju plans to attack a clan of bears, but Balto intervenes just as a massive formation of ice floes converges into a natural land bridge.
Balto leads the way across the bridge, leaving Nava to hold the rear. When Aleu tries to assist Nava, Niju attacks, and Balto must turn back to save them, leaving the pack temporarily leaderless. Nava, weakened by age, cannot complete the journey, and Balto urges Niju to take up the mantle of leadership. Niju, however, remains fearful and reluctant to abandon his home, choosing avoidance over responsibility.
Balto prepares to join the pack, but Aleu recognizes that her place is with them as Nava had foretold. Their farewell is heartfelt—the bond between father and daughter endures even as they pursue different paths. Aleu reclaims her role within the pack and steps into leadership, while Balto remains a guiding presence from the shore. Nava departs to seek out Niju so they can weather the winter together, and the raven returns to Balto, transforming into Aniu, who reveals herself to be Balto’s mother. With that revelation, Balto begins his hopeful journey back toward home.
