In 1899, Earth's major cities were violently attacked by towering Martian Tripods. A young boy named Eric Wells witnessed this brutal assault, which resulted in the tragic death of his parents, leaving him traumatized in the wreckage of Leeds.

Against all odds, the Martian Tripods faced unexpected defeat when Earth's ordinary microbes proved disastrous for them. Eric, spared from the atrocities, saw the Tripod fall, marking the beginning of a new chapter in humanity's struggle against alien invaders.

By 1914, Manhattan had transformed into a dieselpunk/steampunk world, rising from the ashes of its past. Humanity embraced reverse-engineered Martian technology, paving the way for significant advancements amidst an atmosphere charged with tension as World War I loomed.

Now 25 years old, Eric Wells commands the Allied Resistance Earth Squadrons (A.R.E.S), leading a diverse team of soldiers. Among them are American, Irish, Canadian, and Malayan allies, all united by a common goal to combat the lingering Martian threat.

General Sergei Kushnirov leads A.R.E.S. with a heavy heart, scarred by the loss of his family during the Martian invasion. His leadership is crucial as tensions rise within the squad, especially with the looming threat of war against the Martians.

As A.R.E.S. prepares for a simulated war game against Japanese forces, they plan to showcase their new steam-powered Achilles-class Battle Tripod, 'The Goliath'. However, the simulation raises doubts and tensions among the alliance as the specter of real conflict approaches.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo becomes a pivotal moment that jolts Eric and his team. This event reinforces the urgency for humanity to unite against the return of the Martian threat, as they realize that chaos is re-emerging.

Amid increasing tensions, the Martians launch a second wave of assaults. With towering, 100-foot-tall tripods equipped with devastating heat rays, they render Earth's defenses nearly useless, leading to chaos and destruction across cities.

To combat the Martian resurgence, Kushnirov orchestrates an ambush in New Mexico, where Eric's team collaborates with local militia. In a fierce battle, they manage to destroy two enemy tripods but are left to face the remaining one alone.

Following their ambush, Eric's team discovers a sinister factory where humans are harvested for the Martian war effort. With courage, they launch a rescue operation, successfully liberating captives and destroying the factory's operations.

As chaos reigns in New York, the Martians infiltrate A.R.E.S.'s headquarters, leading to a desperate fight led by Roosevelt and his men. Their unexpected courage stands against overwhelming odds until reinforcements arrive in the form of A.R.E.S.'s airships.

A.R.E.S.'s fleeting victory is disrupted when a colossal Martian spaceship rises from New York Harbor, unleashing heat rays upon the city. The airships engage the threat but soon realize the scale of destruction the aliens are capable of inflicting.

In the midst of the battle, the Leviathan faces devastating hits, leading to chaos aboard as crew members struggle to maintain control. Kushnirov's son Dimitri is tragically caught in the melee, leading to a heartfelt moment between father and son.

Kushnirov makes the ultimate sacrifice to regain control of the Leviathan, steering it into a monumental collision with the Martian spacecraft. His act of bravery marks a pivotal moment in the battle, signaling a definitive stand against the Martian invasion.

In the aftermath of the cataclysmic clash, Roosevelt rallies the survivors to instill a sense of determination in the face of devastation. With a shared commitment to rebuild their world, humanity resolves to take the fight back to the Martians and reclaim their future.
