Kushnirov received intelligence about the Martian strategy during the extraction, revealing that the New Mexico attack was designed to lure A.R.E.S. away from their stronghold.

Humanity defeated the Martians through a combination of reverse-engineered technology, coordinated resistance, and sacrifice. The A.R.E.S. forces used their steam-powered Battle Tripod 'The Goliath' and airships Leviathan and Agemmon to fight back. The final victory came when Kushnirov sacrificed the Leviathan to destroy the Martian command ship, and the combined human forces managed to push back the invasion after suffering heavy losses.

The victory was pyrrhic, as the narrative emphasized that humanity had won this battle but the war against the Martians was far from over.

The Goliath was the A.R.E.S.'s newly developed steam-powered Achilles-class Battle Tripod, representing humanity's first successful reverse-engineered weapon modeled after Martian technology. Its debut was planned for the War Games simulation against Japanese forces, and it symbolized humanity's ability to not only defend against but also replicate alien technology.

The introduction of the Goliath represented humanity's technological leap forward and their determination to fight fire with fire against the Martian invaders.

Theodore Roosevelt served as Secretary of War and provided political leadership during the Martian invasion, fighting alongside his men at A.R.E.S.'s headquarters when the Martians breached the defenses. Nikola Tesla was depicted as an influential figure working with the resistance, contributing his scientific expertise to developing countermeasure technologies against the Martian threat.

Both historical figures were integrated into the dieselpunk alternate history as key figures in humanity's response to the Martian invasion.
