What Happens in Independence Daysaster: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Independence Daysaster (2013) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In Moose Ridge, Oregon, Keenan Tracey as Andrew Garsette, his two friends, Casey Dubois as Nick Miller and Andrea Brooks as Eliza, and his uncle Ryan Merriman as Pete Garsette, a local firefighter, prepare to meet Andrew's father and Pete's brother, U.S. President Sam Garsette, Tom Everett Scott who is coming home for the Fourth of July celebrations. Sam approaches on Marine One, but the helicopter is unexpectedly rerouted to nearby Dixon Airbase. Meanwhile, Emily Holmes as Celia Lehman, a SETI scientist, is informed of a mysterious signal heading toward Earth.

Suddenly, alien machines begin drilling through the surface from underground, and more alien drones shoot from the sky, appearing in places around the world. Pete convinces Secret Service agents to take the children away while he tries to help the townspeople. He finds Celia broken down on the side of the road and reluctantly agrees to bring her into town, but the town is already devastated; they decide to head to Dixon. Sam orders Vice President Dennis Brubaker and General Moore not to engage the ships without solid intel, but Marine One is shot down, and Brubaker assumes the presidency as Washington, D.C. is destroyed. Brubaker, with the reluctant approval of base officer Spears, Jill Teed as Spears, authorizes a counterattack while Michael Kopsa as General Moore weighs the risks.

Brubaker and Moore reach Dixon Airbase, and the plan to respond begins to unfold. Back in town, the Secret Service convoy is hit; agents are killed and Nick is injured. Andrew, Eliza and Nick reunite with Pete and Celia; they witness a dogfight between alien drones and fighter jets. The jets are no match for the attackers, but Pete manages to down one drone with Celia's phonon-emitting device. They reach Dixon and try to summon help, but a massive ship appears and Nick disappears, presumably killed.

Pete and Celia realize the device can disable the aliens by breaking their connection with the mothership, and they acquire an alien battery to boost its power. In a subsequent clash, the device is activated and the drones collapse, giving humanity a critical edge. Surviving a crash, Sam encounters Todd, a computer whiz played by Iain Belcher, who helps him contact Dixon with the aid of his friend Leni, portrayed by Grace Sherman. They confirm Sam's survival to Brubaker, who reveals that the alien mothership lies near the Moon, a discovery that raises the stakes for any offensive action. Sam resists ordering another nuclear strike on the ship; the drones surrounding the mothership intercept the missiles, and Moore warns that the invading force is releasing a gas that could make Earth uninhabitable within days.

A bold plan forms: a drone carrying the device will ascend to the mothership and, with a satellite signal, disable the drones' connections. Sam contacts a team of Army Rangers to launch missiles, while Andrew, Eliza, Todd and Leni work to send the activating signal from the ground. The effort is interrupted by an alien ambush, but Pete intervenes, igniting his truck’s fuel with a Roman candle and repairing the communications lines, allowing the kids to resend the signal. As missiles approach the ship, many are blocked again, yet the final payload manages to reach the mothership and destroy it. The explosion resembles a giant, dazzling firework, ending a tense chapter of the invasion, though the film closes with the looming presence of a larger alien fleet approaching Earth.

Independence Daysaster Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Independence Daysaster (2013): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why was Marine One diverted from Moose Ridge to Dixon Airbase?

Marine One was diverted because the alien invasion had already begun. The mysterious signal detected by SETI had triggered the attack, and as Sam Garsette's helicopter approached Moose Ridge, alien machines were already drilling through the ground in the area. The Secret Service made the decision to redirect the presidential helicopter to Dixon Airbase for safety, cutting short the planned Fourth of July family reunion.

Foreshadowing: The rerouting is the first indication that the holiday celebration will be interrupted by the unfolding crisis.

Q2

How did Pete and Celia manage to disable an alien drone?

Pete and Celia used a phonon-emitting device developed by Celia at SETI. During the dogfight between alien drones and human fighter jets, Pete deployed the device which emitted sound waves capable of disrupting the alien technology. The phonon frequency interfered with the drone's systems, causing it to crash. This device became humanity's most effective weapon against the invaders.

Foreshadowing: Celia's SETI work with the mysterious signal earlier foreshadows her expertise becoming crucial to the defense.

Q3

What happened to Nick after the mothership appeared?

Nick disappeared when the massive alien mothership appeared in the sky above Dixon Airbase. While the exact moment is not shown on screen, he presumably was killed during the mothership's arrival or the subsequent attack. His disappearance marks a significant loss for the group and adds to the stakes of the invasion.

Foreshadowing: The Secret Service convoy attack earlier in the film already established that Nick was vulnerable and injured.

Q4

How did President Sam Garsette survive after Marine One was shot down?

After Marine One was shot down during the invasion, Sam survived the crash. He encountered Todd, a computer whiz, who helped him contact Dixon Airbase using communication equipment. With Todd's help and his friend Leni, Sam confirmed his survival to the team at Dixon, allowing the resistance to regroup around his leadership for the final counterattack.

Foreshadowing: The sudden loss of communication with Sam earlier creates tension that his survival resolves.

Q5

Why didn't the nuclear missiles destroy the alien mothership?

The nuclear missiles were intercepted by alien drones before they could reach the mothership. The drones surrounding the mothership detected and destroyed the incoming missiles, demonstrating the advanced technology of the alien fleet. This failure led to the development of the alternative plan using the phonon device to disable the drones' connection to the mothership.

Foreshadowing: General Moore's caution about engaging without solid intel proves justified as the initial military response fails.

Q6

What was the phonon device and how did it defeat the aliens?

The phonon device was a sound-wave technology developed by Celia Lehman at SETI. It worked by emitting specific frequencies that broke the connection between alien drones and their mothership. When this connection was severed, the drones became disabled and collapsed. By amplifying the device with an alien battery and sending the activating signal via satellite, the team was able to disable the entire drone fleet and destroy the mothership.

Foreshadowing: Celia's detection of the alien signal earlier establishes her understanding of alien technology.

  • phonon device

Q7

How did the final plan to destroy the mothership work?

The plan involved two coordinated efforts: a drone carrying the amplified phonon device would ascend to the mothership while Army Rangers launched missiles as a distraction. Simultaneously, Andrew, Eliza, Todd, and Leni would send the activating signal from the ground using a satellite connection. When Pete restored the communication lines after an ambush, the signal was successfully transmitted, breaking the drone-mothership link and allowing the final missile to reach and destroy the mothership.

Foreshadowing: The earlier successful use of the phonon device against a single drone established this approach would work on a larger scale.

Q8

What does the final scene reveal about the alien threat?

After the mothership is destroyed in a spectacular explosion resembling a giant firework, the movie's final scene reveals a larger alien fleet approaching Earth. This establishes that the victory was only temporary and humanity has won a battle but not the war. The larger fleet looming on the horizon creates a bittersweet ending, suggesting the characters' actions have bought Earth time but not ensured permanent safety.

Foreshadowing: General Moore's warning about the toxic gas and the overwhelming force of the invasion foreshadows that the threat is far from over.

Q9

What happened to the U.S. government during the invasion?

After Marine One was shot down and Washington, D.C. was destroyed by the alien attack, Vice President Dennis Brubaker assumed the presidency. He then coordinated with General Moore and base officer Spears at Dixon Airbase to organize humanity's counterattack. Brubaker made the decision to authorize nuclear strikes and later supported the final plan to destroy the mothership.

Foreshadowing: The sudden rerouting of Marine One and the destruction of the capital city set the stage for the leadership transition.
