Their foray is brutally interrupted when a horde of zombies is drawn by the noise. Kevin is overwhelmed and bitten, his fate sealed the moment Cassie intervenes and ends his life with a swift mercy. The grim moment strengthens the resolve of the survivors, who decide to leave the safety of the cabin and travel together, hopeful that they can find more people and a safer place to call home. They learn that a distant island, Catalina, is believed to be a survivor camp—a beacon of hope in a world overrun by the living dead.

The quartet’s first test comes at a strip mall, where they raid a surf shop for footwear and protective gear. A fast, unpredictable “runner” zombie bursts onto the scene, drawing a larger crowd of slower walkers. Cassie acts decisively, killing the runner and guiding the group out the back while danger remains close behind. That night, the survivors share a hesitant meal inside a diner, a rare moment of fragile camaraderie amid the encroaching chaos. The following day takes them to a so‑called Human Safe Zone at a high school; the sight of empty corridors and lifeless cots hints at a community abandoned in a crisis. As they explore the gym, they are swallowed by a flood of zombies pouring in from every doorway. In the chaos, Ramona is separated from the others, and Billie is overwhelmed and bitten. The group finds Ramona in the showers and delivers the grim news about Billie, a blow that deepens their shared resolve to press on.

Continuing their trek, they push through a burned-out neighborhood and stumble upon a house on fire. An archer suddenly arrives, shooting down a nearby zombie and pulling Mack, Julian, and Ramona into safety. The archer’s group reveals themselves as Myrah, Brockton, and Sarah, and the survivors debate the best route to get to the ferry terminal that would take them to Catalina. Mack advocates a selfless decision to turn back for their missing companions Henry and Cassie, but Brockton insists they press on along their original plan, hoping that distance and timing will eventually align everyone. The road ahead remains perilous, but the newly formed alliance renews their chances of making it to safety together.

As they press onward through the city, danger intensifies. Julian stops to use a portable toilet and uncovered a hidden zombie, triggering a vicious swarm that gobbles up the group in a moment of chaotic panic. Julian is bitten, and the others face a painful choice. He offers to sacrifice himself as a distraction, but his fate accelerates before he can complete the act; the group must subdue him and Mack makes the harrowing decision to end Julian’s life by breaking his neck to prevent a further attack. The weight of the moment is heavy, yet it underscores the unwavering resolve to survive at almost any cost.

Meanwhile, Henry and Cassie make their way toward the ferry dock, choosing to stay on the original route to maximize their chances of reuniting with the others. They discover an abandoned army post and reclaim grenades, using one to scatter a pack of pursuing zombies with a brave blast. The explosion creates just enough chaos to pull them away from danger, but it also draws hordes of undead to their former companions, forcing the group to improvise a safer route. On a rooftop, the two groups of survivors briefly come into view and then separate, only to reunite again as they converge toward the docks. The combined group moves through the streets with a single-minded focus: reach the ferry, find water and food, and stay alive long enough for rescue to arrive.

At the docks, the survivors uncover a sign detailing ferry schedules and quarantine instructions, along with supplies that offer a momentary sense of relief. Yet the peace is short-lived. A pair of infected tigers—terrifying predators in this new world—launch themselves at the group, forcing a deadly confrontation that costs Brockton his life and leaves Henry fatally bitten. With her companion gone and his fate sealed, Henry asks Cassie to end his suffering, and she does so without hesitation, delivering a final mercy in the face of an inevitable, painful demise. The weight of loss settles over the survivors as they wait for the ferry’s next horn, a piercing signal that hope remains possible even as danger closes in.
