The story kicks off with two street racers, the Driver and the Mechanic, embarking on a journey across America in their trusty primer-gray 1955 Chevrolet 150. Their passion for drag racing and the open road is evident as they traverse the iconic Route 66, relying on spontaneous races to fund their travels.

While passing through Flagstaff, Arizona, the Driver and Mechanic pick up a hitchhiker known as the Girl. The encounter injects new energy into their trip, particularly as the Driver begins to develop feelings for her, hinting at possible romantic tension amongst the trio.

As the journey unfolds, an unexpected moment of intimacy arises between the Girl and the Mechanic while the Driver steps away briefly. This moment not only complicates the dynamics among the three but also deepens the underlying emotions surfacing between the characters.

The trio encounters GTO, a rival racer who seems more interested in the aesthetics of his car than in the thrill of racing. Tension escalates as GTO’s abilities as a driver prove to be lacking, stirring a simmering rivalry that impacts the Driver and Mechanic.

Continuing the trek, GTO picks up various hitchhikers along the route, including one particularly annoying individual who escalates the tension within the group. The atmosphere grows increasingly fraught as the drivers navigate both the competition and the distractions from their journey.

As the competition takes a toll on them, the Driver offers GTO a spin in his Chevrolet. This moment of camaraderie hints at a complicated relationship between the competitors, as exhaustion intermingles with the rivalry.

Arriving in Memphis, the rivalry intensifies at a local racetrack, where tensions reach a peak. A dramatic moment unfolds when the Girl unexpectedly jumps into GTO's car, attempting to escape, motivating the Driver to give chase.

The Driver finally corners GTO and the Girl at a diner located on US-129. Here, tension escalates further as GTO proposes a trip to Chicago, which the Girl vehemently declines, revealing the emotional turmoil among the characters.

After suggesting they head to Columbus, Ohio, the Driver is met with further rejection when the Girl again declines his offer. Struggling with feelings of abandonment, she ultimately decides to ride off with a stranger on a motorcycle, leaving the Driver with just her belongings.

In a lighter moment that follows the tension, GTO entertains two soldiers by regaling them with stories of his car's illustrious history. He recounts how he acquired the Chevrolet by defeating two men in a memorable cross-country race, adding to his bravado.
