True History of the Kelly Gang

Ned Kelly's story begins in Van Diemen's Land, where his father, John 'Red' Kelly, an Irishman by birth, is deported to a prison colony. After marrying Ellen Kelly, Red establishes a family in Victoria, Australia, yet his troubled relationship with the law ultimately leads to his imprisonment and death when Ned is only twelve years old.

As a child, Ned demonstrates remarkable courage and compassion when he risks his life to save a drowning boy. This act of heroism shapes his character, but he soon grapples with the realities of his father's criminal activities, leaving him conflicted about his identity and future.

Ellen Kelly works hard to support her children after Red's death, engaging in various means of survival. Her tumultuous relationship with Sergeant O'Neill complicates their lives further, and her involvement with bushranger Harry Power opens new doors for young Ned, but also leads them deeper into crime.

Under the mentorship of Harry Power, Ned becomes involved in criminal activities, succumbing to the thrill of outlaw life. This pivotal shift sets him on a path of rebellion and confrontation with the law, which soon leads to disastrous consequences.

After a violent confrontation with Sgt. O'Neill, Ned is arrested and spends three years in prison. This time away from home fosters a deep sense of anger and injustice within him, which will later drive his motivations upon his return.

Once released, Ned Kelly returns home, where he falls in love with a young Irish prostitute named Mary. Their romantic relationship amidst the swirling chaos of his life provides a glimmer of hope, but it is short-lived as danger soon encroaches.

The peace is shattered when Constable Fitzpatrick comes to arrest the Kelly family. In a desperate act of defiance, Ned fiercely defends his family, setting off a chain of events that will lead to further conflict with the law.

Following his family's conflict with the authorities, Ned and his brother Dan retreat to the hills. They rally friends such as Steve Hart and Joe Byrne, formally creating the Kelly Gang, united in their fight against the oppressive English rule.

As tensions rise, the police arrest Ned's mother and baby sister, using them as leverage to pressure him into surrendering. Instead of complying, Ned's resolve strengthens, and he retaliates violently, escalating the conflict further.

The gang takes refuge in Glenrowan, where they capture several hostages, including the local schoolmaster. In this tense environment, Ned is encouraged to document his story, reflecting their struggle against systemic oppression.

After being captured, Ned Kelly is convicted of murder, a grim conclusion to his tumultuous life as an outlaw. Faced with his fate, he draws strength and resolve from his mother's words, encouraging him to 'die like a Kelly.'
