Following the sermon, Patrick engages in conversation with his friend Ed, who suggests a way to escape their small-town worries, but Patrick feels trapped in Garlow, despite his yearning for a fresh start.

Meanwhile, Patrick’s son innocently inquires whether his father desires a gun. Patrick chuckles wryly, revealing that he already owns a rifle.
