Tonight and Every Night (1945) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Tonight and Every Night (1945), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Near the end of the war, a Life magazine photographer arrives in London to tell the story of a music hall that never misses a show, even as the city endures the Blitz. The Music Box Theatre becomes a rock of resilience, a place where audiences seek a moment of escape, and where the performers’ spirits push against the surrounding darkness.

Stage manager Sam Royce remembers the early days when the troupe faced fear with a choice to keep faith with their craft. The show’s impresario, May “Tolly” Tolliver [Florence Bates], is at the helm, guiding a troupe that includes a gifted yet raw dancer named Tommy Lawson [Marc Platt]. Tommy’s improvisational style makes him brilliant, but Tolly initially refuses him. In a gesture of compassion, the women of the company—Rosalind Bruce [Rita Hayworth]—and Judy Kane [ Janet Blair]—step in to coach him through the steps they know, and Tommy earns a place in the lineup.

A familiar face among the audience is RAF pilot Paul Lundy [Lee Bowman], a man drawn to Ros and enthralled by the warmth she radiates. A spark ignites after a bombing raid, when their paths cross in the aftermath. Paul invites Ros to dinner, but she initially declines; yet after the raid, the pair reconnect over champagne in a moment that hints at something more. Ros warms to the idea of dating him, yet Paul’s charm masks a trick—he lures her to his apartment with a promise to introduce her to a soldier from her hometown of St. Louis, only to reveal that the soldier is a phantom. The breach stings, and Ros must decide whether to remain cautious or to trust again.

Despite the rift, Paul’s commitment to the troupe remains strong. He persuades his superiors to allow the Music Box company to perform at an upcoming RAF theatrical event, hoping to make amends. During the RAF appearance, Ros begins to forgive him as he confesses his love, and the couple draws a little closer as he heads back to duty. Meanwhile, Tommy—torn between his loyalty to Ros and his own feelings—begins to drink, grief-stricken by what he perceives as Ros’s growing distance.

When Paul returns from a mission, a poignant plan unfolds: a quiet evening at his apartment before he leaves again on a secret assignment. But tragedy interrupts when the building is flattened in a German bombing raid, and the two are suddenly cut off from any immediate future together. The next day, Paul is summoned away on orders, and a two-week silence follows. Ros reads flyers and discovers that Paul’s squadron has been granted leave, leading her to fear that her romance might be fading into memory.

In the midst of uncertainty, a note arrives from Paul’s father, Reverend Gerald Lundy [Philip Merivale], asking to meet after the show that night. The Reverend reveals the intertwining of faith and love, presenting a Bible for Ros that marks a turning point: a highlighted passage points to a future they might share, and the Reverend himself offers a heartfelt proposal on behalf of his absent son, welcoming Ros into the family.

Tommy’s jealousy surfaces as he contemplates Ros’s future. He congratulates Ros on the possibility of happiness, then suggests a Canada honeymoon, but Ros remains devoted to the troupe and to her companions on stage. Judy, secretly in love with Tommy, seeks him out at the pub to share a toast to Ros. In a cruel twist of fate, a German bomb tears through the pub, killing both Judy and Tommy. The tragedy is devastating, but the night’s performance continues, and Ros—now moved by Judy’s memory—sings Judy’s last song, a stirring moment that reinforces her resolve to stay with the show and carry the troupe’s spirit forward.

In the quiet aftermath, the film leaves the audience with a portrait of resilience—two worlds held together by music, performance, and a shared belief that some stages burn brighter in the darkest times. The Music Box Theatre remains a beacon, where love, sacrifice, and the power of a live performance coexist, keeping stories alive even when bombs fall and futures hang in the balance.
