Maria Rainer, Carrie Underwood, a young postulant at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, spends a quiet day reflecting on the mountains, the wind in the pines, and the sense that she might be meant for something beyond the walls she’s known. When she returns to the abbey, the Mother Abbess, Audra McDonald, informs her that she is to become the new governess for the von Trapp children, a role that will thrust her into a bustling, disciplined household she has yet to meet.
Upon arriving at the von Trapp residence, she is met by the Captain Von Trapp, Stephen Moyer, a widower whose outward reserve has grown almost part of his armor since his wife’s death. The children march in with military precision, their routines and expectations rigidly maintained, and Maria must learn to win their trust and their voices. The situation is tense at first, with the captain’s cold demeanor and the children’s wary reception creating a barrier that Maria is determined to dissolve through warmth, patience, and a gentle push toward shared moments of singing.
A month passes, and the Captain returns home with Elsa Schrader, Laura Benanti, whom he is courting, and their friend Max Detweiler, Christian Borle, who is scouting the area for a perfect local choir to perform at the annual festival at Kaltzberg. The family arrives to greet him in play clothes that Maria has sewn from old curtains, a sight that shocks and embarrasses him. He confronts Maria, insisting she does not understand his children, and orders her to return to Nonnberg Abbey. Yet when he hears his children sing under her guidance for Schraeder, a new awareness dawns on him: perhaps Maria has seen something the family has been missing, and he begins to reconsider his stance and invites her to stay.
To introduce Schraeder and the idea of a grand performance, the Captain hosts a lavish party, and when the band plays a lively Ländler, his youngest son asks Maria to teach him the dance. The Captain steps in to help, and as they move together, a quiet, unspoken attraction begins to form between Maria and the Captain. Maria, torn between her growing feelings and her vows, attempts to keep the moment in check, but Brigitta von Trapp, Sophia Anne Caruso, notices the creeping bond and confronts Maria. Maria denies any romantic flutter, yet she cannot ignore Brigitta’s perceptive truth-telling.
Schraeder calls the children to bid the guests good night, and Max imagines the von Trapps performing at the festival; meanwhile, Maria goes back to the Abbey to confide in the Mother Abbess that she has fallen in love with the Captain and feels called to a life beyond the religious vows she’s contemplated. The Mother Abbess, wise and kind, encourages Maria to face her path with courage and to live the life she was born to lead, rather than simply retreat into vows.
Back at the house, Maria resumes her duties and the children welcome her return with a renewed warmth. When Schraeder’s engagement and future look uncertain, the Captain and Maria admit their feelings for one another and decide to marry at the Abbey. They marry just as World events begin to press in: Germany annexes Austria, casting a dangerous shadow over their happiness. Maria, quick on her feet, hands the Admiral in charge the festival program she and the family prepared, showing that the von Trapp Family Singers are set to perform, a clue that helps keep the family together long enough to plan an escape.
As the finale unfolds, Max announces that a guard of honor will escort the Captain away as soon as the concert ends. Maria leads the family in one final song, and, one by one, the von Trapp children slip away with her help. The Nazi soldiers search the Abbey in vain, as the family chooses to flee Austria across the mountains, seeking freedom and safety beyond their homeland. Their escape, guided by Maria’s steadfast resolve and the family’s collective courage, marks the start of a new chapter—one built on song, loyalty, and the strength to choose love even in the face of upheaval.
