As the clock ticks down to the end of the First World War, a British officer, referred to solely as “John Smith,” finds himself within the confines of an English asylum. His memories, clouded by the toxic fumes of warfare, reduce him to nothing more than a lost statistic among countless lives wrecked by conflict. When an announcement declares the end of the war, the caretakers of the asylum vacate their posts, granting Smith a fleeting opportunity to escape unnoticed into the nearby Midlands town of Melbridge.

In Melbridge, he encounters the enchanting singer Paula Ridgeway, whose vocals have the power to captivate anyone. Recognizing a connection to the asylum in Smith, Paula, seeing his disoriented state as harmless, takes it upon herself to introduce him to her itinerant theatrical group. As they journey together from town to town, Smith becomes an unexpected source of stability in Paula’s restless life.

However, as their relationship deepens, an unforeseen event threatens to shatter their newfound happiness. As Margaret prepares for her extended voyage, an urgent need sends her back to that fateful cottage where Charles awaits her arrival.
