Major Donald Craig, an LRDG officer, is held prisoner aboard a ship in the French port of Algiers along with captured Italian soldiers. His capture triggers a risky rescue effort coordinated with the SIG. The assignment marks the start of the climactic mission, as every hour counts toward Tobruk.

Craig is rescued by German Jews of the SIG led by Captain Bergman and is escorted to join the LRDG. They rendezvous at Kufra in southeastern Libya, where the team consolidates for the mission. The alliance with the SIG sets the stage for the stealthy infiltration into Tobruk.

The group finalizes an infiltration plan that uses disguised POWs escorted by SIG guards to slip into Tobruk. Lieutenant-Colonel Harker asserts the revised plan is his and urges discipline to avoid personal differences derailing the operation. The window to strike the fuel depot tightens.

The unit encounters an Italian tank patrol in a gully and engineers a ruse to draw them into fighting each other, buying time to advance. Craig safely guides them through a minefield, maintaining the stealth core of the mission. The incident tests the team's nerve as they push toward Tobruk.

A British Curtiss P-40 Warhawk strafes the column, destroying a truck, their fuel supply, and both radios. The loss compounds the mission's peril, forcing improvisation under pressure. Harker orders a burial party as smoke draws Tuareg tribesmen toward the scene.

Tuareg tribesmen, friendly to the Germans, assist after the chaos. Craig negotiates with them in their language and exchanges guns and ammunition for two prisoners, Henry Portman and his daughter Cheryl, who carry documents linking a supposed British plan and Axis support. The exchange creates an uneasy liaison inside the operation.

The Portmans use the gun and a map to contact the Germans in Tobruk via an underground telephone cable to alert them to the British attack. Cheryl is captured by Italians soon after and Henry is killed; Cheryl is wounded, intensifying the risk of a mole inside SIG. Bergman assigns two hours to investigate the potential traitor.

Bergman and Krug retrieve Cheryl, but she dies of cyanide poisoning and Bruckner's body is found in a tunnel, hinting at an inside betrayal. The deaths deepen suspicions within SIG as the team presses toward Tobruk. Harker remains determined to complete the mission despite the treacherous environment.

The LRDG penetrates Tobruk, where Rommel has two panzer divisions undetected. With no radios, they cannot report back, and RAF bombs Tobruk as planned, complicating the operation. The group proceeds to sabotage harbour guns to buy time.

Bergman and three men die creating a diversion, allowing Craig and Krug to escape with two SIG members. They seize a German tank and destroy the fuel depot, striking a major blow to Rommel's fuel supply. Mohnfeld reveals himself as von Kruger, a German intelligence officer, and asks Harker for the Kesselring document; Harker admits burning it and then kills von Kruger while guards kill Harker.

Craig, Krug, and their two SIG survivors traverse over 70 miles down the Libyan coast on foot to reach an alternate rendezvous with a Royal Navy ship at Sallum, just over the Egyptian border. The journey culminates in a hard-won escape as Allied forces await offshore. The mission ends with the group's safe departure toward extraction.
