Mangalam prepares for the prospective groom's visit as Chella Durai and his family come to her house. He is drawn to Mangalam, who is naive and shy, setting the stage for a budding romance. The encounter marks the beginning of their complicated relationship.

The next day Chella Durai visits Mangalam at the riverside and she panics in his presence. Nambiar misreads the scene as misbehavior and orders his men to intervene. Chella Durai overpowers them, and Nambiar learns that Chella Durai is Mangalam's intended groom.

Ayyavu loves Mangalam but is not informed of the groom's visit. The family consults the astrologer to fix a date, but there is no auspicious day that month, so the wedding reception is postponed to next month.

Chella Durai returns to Mangalam's house; she is alone and shy, and she runs away when he approaches. Nambiar arrives and proposes a plan to court Mangalam more effectively.

Chella Durai seizes Mangalam and carries her away, and she gradually opens up to him. The act forges a deeper bond between them as they spend time alone together.

On the new moon day, Nambiar conducts rites for a suicide victim. Meanwhile Chella Durai hopes to explain sexuality to Mangalam, and she starts to fall more deeply in love with him.

Chella Durai's stepmother demands more dowry; Chella Durai brings money to Ponnambalam to smooth the path for Mangalam's marriage, but Ponnambalam is humiliated and refuses to compromise.

Mangalam advises Chella Durai to marry another girl due to the dowry problem, but Chella Durai pushes for elopement and tries to gather funds. He is caught stealing money and locked in a room; Mangalam waits for sunrise while Chella Durai fails to appear. Ponnambalam attempts suicide, and Nambiar intervenes to save him.

The next day Ponnambalam doubts Mangalam's innocence, and Mangalam, hearing this, burns her feet in a moment of desperation. Ponnambalam later forgives Mangalam but continues to detest Chella Durai.

Nambiar invites Chella Durai to stay and vows to unite Mangalam and Chella Durai in 1 month or cut half his moustache. He agitates a panchayat, causing villagers to desert him, and there are only 15 days left in the countdown.

In the last 10 days, Chella Durai takes a nuptial string to Mangalam and fights Ayyavu and his men. Nambiar counters by stirring anti-Mangalam sentiment in buses, prompting some to visit Mangalam and reject her. The social pressure mounts as Chella Durai stands his ground.

Chella Durai defeats Nambiar and remembers their bond. Nambiar reveals his own heartbreak and urges Chella Durai to marry Mangalam. In the culmination, Ponnambalam forgives Mangalam and consents to her marriage after a tragedy unfolds; Ayyavu stabs Ponnambalam, Chella Durai intervenes, and Ponnambalam dies, yielding final consent to Mangalam's marriage.
