Melinda Grant Sandra Dee is a 16-year-old girl from the small town of Libertyville who dreams of leaving her hometown and seeing the world beyond. She is raised by Elizabeth Grant Teresa Wright, a seamstress and single mother who, despite the town’s gossip about Melinda’s supposed illegitimacy, insists that her daughter’s father died when she was an infant.

At a school dance, Melinda is taunted by Polly Fisher Luana Patten and Bruce Mitchell Jody McCrea, but she finds a friend in Will Henderson John Saxon, the son of a traveling salesman who has lived in many towns. Will longs to settle somewhere, while Melinda yearns to see the world.

Tension rises when Bruce and a few of his friends try to drive them off the road after Will offers Melinda a ride home. The moment she auditions for the school play, Our Town, under the guidance of Miss Robson Virginia Grey and earns a leading role that outshines Polly’s, the dynamics within the town begin to shift.

Meanwhile, Will’s father Ed Henderson James Whitmore pushes his son to befriend the “right kids” to help his sales business, creating a push-pull between family loyalty and social ambition. Elizabeth worries about Melinda being drawn into romance but supports her by sewing a costume for the play, a quiet sign of her growing trust and belief in her daughter’s future.

Polly attempts to blackmail Melinda into relinquishing the role, especially on Parents Night, and then goes further by publicly insinuating that Melinda and Will are lovers. Bruce retaliates with a harsh attack on Will, and Will, defending himself, knocks Bruce out. Although the adults see only the aftermath of the scuffle, they want Will arrested until Ed steps in to defend his son, bluntly telling everyone that his family is leaving town and warning them not to pursue charges.

Elizabeth’s confession about Melinda’s father leaving town casts a new fear over Melinda’s horizon: the worry that she might be seduced and abandoned just as her mother was. Yet Will offers reassurance, promising that he will return after his family departs, a vow that lingers as the town prepares to say goodbye.
