The Translators

The publication of the last part of the globally successful book trilogy Dedalus is imminent, and to prevent any data leaks or spoilers, the translation project is designed to run in complete isolation and under strict security. The nine translators, chosen from the countries where Dedalus sells best, are whisked away to a secluded bunker to translate the manuscript into their respective languages. In this controlled environment, the translators receive only small sections of the secret book each day, so progress happens slowly and carefully, with every word weighed for accuracy and secrecy.

From the outset, the operation is tense. The mastermind behind the translation project is the publisher Éric Angstrom, who oversees the process because the true identity of the famed author Oscar Brach remains unknown to all but a trusted few. The group’s safety feels precarious as they are cut off from the outside world, living in a guarded routine while the clock ticks toward a potential public release. To add to the pressure, a ransom note arrives demanding five million euros to prevent any further pages from appearing online, a demand that injects fear and suspicion into the bunker’s already fraught atmosphere.

As the pages begin to surface in scattered bits online, distrust between the translators swells. Angstrom tries to maintain control by leaning on fear—pressuring the translators individually and ruling the bunker with a firm hand. The strain proves deadly: Helene, the Danish translator, is driven to despair, and her suicide marks a dark turning point that heightens the sense of danger and mistrust among the group. The pressure cooker only grows hotter as secrets begin to spill.

Interlaced with the present peril are flashbacks that peel back the curtain on another layer of the plot. The English translator, Alex Goodman, is shown scheming to steal the manuscript. He allies with some of his fellow translators and seems to have secretly copied portions of the book from Angstrom even before the translation project formally begins. This planned heist adds a new layer of intrigue and shows that the stakes extend beyond mere security; they touch the authorship and ownership of Dedalus itself.

As more pages go public, the bunker’s tension escalates into a volatile and dangerous standoff. Angstrom opens fire on Goodman and Katerina Anisinova, the Russian translator, sending shockwaves through the tense enclave. The once-loyal security forces turn against the publisher, and Angstrom finds himself arrested as the net of suspicion closes in around him. In the aftermath, Goodman pays a personal visit to the prisoner and reveals a startling truth: Goodman is Oscar Brach himself. The public revelation reframes the entire conflict, exposing Angstrom’s greed and the lengths to which he went to control the book’s fate.

What follows deepens the drama even further. Goodman, having mingled with the translators under the cover of impersonating a contributor, exposes Angstrom’s methods and greed, while also recounting a crucial piece of a long-standing relationship: Georges Fontaine, the bookseller whom Angstrom killed after refusing to continue their collaboration, was in fact a close friend of Goodman. Goodman had known Georges since childhood and had shown him his manuscript, agreeing that Georges would publish Dedalus only if he pretended to be the author. This revelation ties together past loyalties with present crises and casts the events in a new light.

In the end, the confession and the cascade of revelations lead to Angstrom’s downfall. He remains imprisoned, stripped of power, while Goodman’s true identity as Oscar Brach is finally secured, and the murder of Georges Fontaine is avenged through the unraveling of Angstrom’s machinations. The drama within the bunker, the high-stakes ransom, and the layered deceptions all converge to reveal a complex web of ambition, betrayal, and literary legacy, leaving the audience with a sobering meditation on authorship, profit, and the price of control.
