Twenty-five years later, deputy marshal Wayne begins investigating a puzzling string of cattle mutilations in the area. With few leads to follow, the case tests his patience and instincts as he searches for any tangible pattern.

A scientist from California, Jennifer, arrives to oversee a geology project in the Little Creek area. She brings new theories about the mutilations and challenges Wayne's conclusions, setting a tense but collaborative dynamic.

As they debate the origins of the mutilations, Wayne and Jennifer clash over possible causes. Despite their professional friction, they are drawn to each other by an inexplicable, almost familiar connection.
