In the quiet glow of a gas station in the small New Mexico town of Little Creek, a night encounter unfolds in 1955 that will echo across decades. A young girl, traveling with her father, wanders the deserted main street and crosses paths with a local boy. Both are spellbound by a mysterious column of light from above that pierces the darkness. When the light vanishes as quickly as it appeared, the girl hurries back to her father’s car, and the car pulls away, leaving the memory of that strange moment to linger in their minds.

Fast forward twenty-five years, and the town is troubled by a puzzling string of cattle mutilations with few clues to guide the investigation. Wayne, the town’s deputy marshal, delves into the case, methodically gathering what small leads he can. His efforts are complicated by the arrival of Jennifer, a California scientist tasked with overseeing a geology project in the region. The two clash over the possible causes of the mutilations, yet a surprising current of familiarity runs between them, as if they are bound by something they can’t quite name. As they work side by side, it slowly becomes clear that they share a hidden history: they were the children who met so long ago in Little Creek. Wayne stayed behind and became a police officer, while Jennifer returned to California and worked for her father’s company. She admits she has always felt an inexplicable pull to return to the area, as though the past is pulling her back.

For a time, the case seems to be resolved when a solitary hermit on the town’s outskirts is identified as the culprit. He claims that aliens visited him twenty-five years earlier and that he has not aged since that encounter. He insists he is carrying out a mission from those aliens and explains the purpose behind the mutilations: he has been wielding a knife made of energy to excise parts of cattle and then teleport them into space, using a device concealed in a cave behind his cabin. When Wayne and Jennifer confront him in that cave, the hermit subdues Jennifer and reveals that the aliens gave him a singular purpose that night. His fury wells up when he discovers he is not the only chosen one, and he is stunned when a seemingly fatal strike from the alien knife fails to harm her at all. Saved by Wayne, Jennifer’s survival points to a truth larger than any single crime: the entire sequence of events is, at its core, an experiment conducted by the aliens.
