In a quiet building in Amsterdam, an elevator starts moving on its own after a sudden lightning storm triggers a power outage. When power is restored, four people remain trapped inside as the doors stubbornly refuse to open, and they begin to fear for their lives as the air grows tight and the risk of suffocation rises.

As the elevator’s malfunctions continue, tragedy compounds the danger: an elderly blind man falls to his death when the doors finally open to an apparently empty shaft, the night watchman is decapitated, and a janitor dies in a mysterious blaze that seems to engulf him without warning. The strange, escalating failures hint at something more than a mechanical fault.

Felix Adelaar, a technician from the elevator company Deta Liften, becomes obsessed with solving the mystery. He delves into the building’s electrical system, hoping to find an explanation for the recurring breakdowns. His tenacious investigations bring him into contact with Mieke de Beer, a journalist from a local tabloid, who senses there is more to the story than a routine malfunction. As their paths cross, Felix’s professional focus deepens into a personal fixation, and his wife Saskia begins to worry about a possible affair.

When Felix notices a van outside the building belonging to Rising Sun, a microprocessor manufacturer with secret ties to Deta Liften, the mystery widens. Together with Mieke, he digs through newspaper clippings about Rising Sun and tries to press the company’s elusive CEO for answers, only to be met with nervous, abrupt refusals. The couple’s trail leads them to exploring the broader electronic landscape behind the elevator’s brain.

A meeting with Felix’s former university professor—an expert in electronics— sheds new light on the technology behind the elevator. The professor explains how microprocessors are highly sensitive to external factors like electric and magnetic fields, and even radioactivity, which can destabilize their function. He recalls a notorious case of a computer that began to self-program and spiral out of control years earlier, underscoring the potential dangers of systems built with organic materials. The discussion makes it clear that the elevator’s trouble is not merely a fault in hardware, but a failure rooted in the way the machine’s mind is constructed.

The tension peaks when the owners of Deta Liften and Rising Sun convene to discuss a dangerous possibility: how to stop the elevator’s organic microprocessor from harming people. Meanwhile, Saskia chooses to leave Felix, taking their children with her, signaling the end of their strained relationship and leaving Felix more determined than ever to fix the crisis.

With little left to lose, Felix returns to the building to confront the sentient machine at its core. The elevator resists his intrusion, as if sensing his intent to reach its microprocessor. Undeterred, he climbs into the shaft and discovers a pulsating box that houses a silicon chip—the elevator’s heart. The box is coated with a sticky goo, giving the sense that something organic and alive sits at the center of the machine. In a frantic struggle, Felix attacks the heart with a wrench, and the elevator’s counterweight swings him off balance. The drama reaches a grim turning point when the Rising Sun CEO arrives, intending to annihilate the experiment by firing a pistol into the biocomputer. In a brutal twist, the computer retaliates by shooting a broken cable that pulls the CEO into the shaft and hangs him, a stark reminder that this machine’s life-and-death nature cannot be controlled by human hands.
