On a foggy night in San Francisco, the film opens with a woman’s murder in a shadowy alley, setting a tense, eerie mood from the very first frame. The focus quickly shifts to the protagonists who will chase the strange truth behind the crimes: Brett Kingsford, a noted expert on the supernatural, and his steadfast ally Evelyn Lang. Across the city, a chilling pattern emerges: a string of murders of women eerily echo the 1888 London exploits of Jack the Ripper. Each crime is marked by the presence of a carved ivory statuette—descriptions call them little relics bearing a repulsive reptilian head—that lie beside the bodies. As the killings unfold, it seems the demon at the heart of these acts is not simply a metaphor but a malign force that emerges from the back of its host and grows more visible with each crime. The connections between the four victims begin to hint at a larger, darker scheme that binds the case together.

To unravel the riddle, Kingsford turns to an old Chinese curio dealer, Chi Zang, whose shop holds a relic world apart from ordinary crime—a mummified creature with a terrifying fanged mouth, claimed to be a Sumerian demon. This relic is accompanied by a seven-spoked wheel, a detail that the dealer says foresees a deadly ritual: the demon will commit seven killings, one for each spoke, according to a time-bound, enigmatic schedule known only to the demon itself. Kingsford handles the small mummy, but the moment becomes dangerous when it grows hot in his hands, leaving him with a scratched palm as a stark reminder of the perilous knowledge he has touched.

Seeking more clues, Kingsford visits the import shop of his friend and Evelyn’s fiancé, Robert Vandenburg, where past arrangements set the stage for what comes next. A shadowy figure follows him, and inside the shop the familiar caped killer strikes again. Kingsford fights off the assault, the assailant slipping back into the darkness as the police arrive on the scene. Robert Vandenburg is there as well, reinforcing the sense that every move draws them deeper into a web of occult danger. The sequence ends with a tense standoff and the chilling realization that the mystery is far from over, and the demon’s influence may be closer than anyone suspects.
