In 2005, after serving time in jail, Lebanese Australian John Morkos [George Basha] returns home to a world that has moved on without him. He carves out a modest existence as a cleaner at a boxing gym run by an Aboriginal man, trying to steer clear of past trouble while navigating a city that still feels tense and fractured. It doesn’t take long before a life-changing moment pulls him into a relationship with Sydney [Clare Bowen], an Anglo Australian woman, whom he rescues from an assault. Their bond grows despite the barriers between their communities, illustrating a tentative bridge between cultures as they begin to picture a future together.
John’s focus on family soon brings him into a murkier neighborhood reality. His younger brother Charlie [Firass Dirani] is drawn into street-level conflicts that flare between Lebanese youths and white students at his school. The friction at school becomes personal and dangerous, pulling Charlie deeper into a world where loyalty clashes with pressure and danger lurks behind every corner. Charlie’s path is complicated by his association with Zeus [Ali Haider], and together they start dealing meth for Ibo [Michael Denkha], the local drug kingpin who holds influence and fear over the entire area. The situation grows more menacing as Charlie and Zeus try to stay ahead of both rival groups and the law.
Tensions escalate as the next generation’s rivalries spill into everyday life. At school, a sequence of provocations leads to a brutal blow: the Anglos, led by Scott [Vaughn White], gang-bash a Lebanese student, leaving him badly injured. The Lebanese community contends with the urge for revenge, yet John steps in to calm the waters and urge restraint, hoping to prevent another cycle of violence. Zeus, however, ignores this warning and later confronts Scott at a nightclub, an encounter that ends in tragedy when Zeus opens fire and fatally shoots him, a moment that lands him under police scrutiny and sets off a chain reaction of consequences for Charlie, Zeus, and the wider circle around them.
Romance and family life collide with fear and pressure from the outside world. While John and Sydney’s relationship continues to deepen, it is strained by Sydney’s racist mother who warns of consequences if their union persists. The couple argues, but they also learn to understand each other’s fears and motivations, finding a way back to one another. Meanwhile, John discovers Charlie’s stash of drugs and flushes it away, a small act of defiance that shows he’s not willing to let Charlie slip completely into the dangerous life he’s witnessing.
Violence erupts into the heart of the Morkos family. A drive-by shooting is carried out on the Morkos home by Ibo in a desperate bid to collect the drug money. John seeks help from the boxing gym owner to raise the funds and hands the money over to Ibo in a tense exchange that underscores how dire the situation has become. The same night, Charlie is murdered by Ibo with a shotgun as he walks home from school, a blow that hardens John’s resolve and tightens the family’s grip on grief and fear.
John’s response becomes a brutal reckoning. Enraged and determined to avenge Charlie, he savagely beats Ibo, leaving him near to death and outside the realm of ordinary justice. In the aftermath, John makes a hard choice, deciding to leave Ibo’s fate to the neighbors who despise him and to the fragile balance of the neighborhood. He then returns to his family, with Sydney now pregnant, carrying a future that promises both renewal and the risk of further turmoil. The film closes on a note of uneasy peace, with John choosing to protect what remains of his loved ones while the echoes of the violence linger in the background, reminding viewers of the costs of loyalty, survival, and the pull of two worlds trying to coexist.
